The History of Western Pacific GS-64's
The GS-6's (GS-64's as WP refer them) are WP's first 4-8-4's, they were built by the Lima Locomotive Works in 1943, they were suppose to be built for the Southern Pacific Railroad which they suppose to be 15 for the SP as they planning to number them 4460 through 4475, but 6 were delivered to the Western Pacific Railroad, so had 10 GS-6's, which they were numbered 4460 through 4469, while 6 were numbered 481 through 486 by WP, the only difference between a Southern Pacific GS-6 Class and a Western Pacific GS-64 Class that WP equipped them with Smoke Deflectors, SP never give their GS-6's with Smoke Deflectors, WP use their GS-64 for Freight & Passenger Service but sadly, none of them were preserved, as all of them were retired in 1953, and the last GS-64 was sadly scrapped in 1958, fortunately, WP kept the GS-64 Tenders and convert them as Steam Generators for Snow Plows, all though the GS-64's were scrapped, but luckily another GS-6 have survived, no. 4460 was preserved by SP in 1959 as the locomotive was donated to the National Museum of Transportation in St. Louis Missouri, where the Locomotive still sits on display.
