so far the best workshops is in my experience the tannery.
also being an a necromancer of some sort makes it very easy to keep the wages of your party down so you quickly make ton of moneys making the workshops or caravans irrellevant.

farming bandits and herdstones/chaos portals is probably the easiest when you have a decent party

yep...you quickly find out who to farm at the stage you are at....usually it start with looters, empire desserters. when you reach a decent level you should become a hired sword for a decent kingdoom. that will secure you are good income and once you start to defeat other lords then the loot really become valuable.
