Block's Leveling Mod:

Compatibility:
Multiplayer compatibility:
Net-code is in place to keep XP and levels synced when dropping or otherwise transferring items. However, players should ensure they personally craft their weapons apply Runes to their weapons themselves, as there are still some issues; if another player applies a Rune to a weapon or crafts that weapon, and gives it to someone else, that weapon will inexplicably lose its ability to gain XP if the player dies or leaves/rejoins the game.

Mod compatibility:
Should be fine with any other mod, though it cannot handle modded rarities and will default them to the highest possible Rune requirement (Use Ethereal Runes to manually balance). Has cross-mod features with my other mod, 'Weapon Augments', in which your weapons can gain extra slots for Augments as they level up.
Exception; there is an odd issue with Terraria Overhaul, in which using both this mod and Overhaul may cause your game to start heavily lagging and desyncing after a while; proceed with caution when attempting to use both at once.

Bugs?:
Known Issues:
Minions may sometimes seemingly stop earning XP and Levels, even though the game announces them leveling up.
First try dismissing the summons and re-summoning them. If that doesn't work, next try disabling the leveling (Via. a Blank Rune) and re-enabling it with a new Rune. If all else fails, unfortunately you'll have to settle for a clean staff/weapon.
In either case I HIGHLY suggest using a mod like Cheat Sheet or similar to give yourself the necessary items (Ex: A new copy of the weapon, Rune(s), XP orbs) to re-do lost progress, so as to minimize inconvenience.

Rune Application Troubleshooting:
A common issue some players appear to be having is weapons not being able to level up after having a Rune applied. I haven't been able to re-create this so if you encounter this problem posting details on things such as mod-list, gear/weapons, single/multi-player, and the like would be very useful! But first, here are a few pitfalls that may be causing you problems:
  • The weapon you want to use the Rune on should be selected/highlighted in your HOTBAR, as opposed to attached to the cursor. Trying to use a Rune while having an item on the cursor will confuse the mod and consume the Rune without doing anything!
  • Verify the XP tooltip added to the weapon (It should be at the bottom with a Level tooltip) is in fact not incrementing. There's no immediate feedback for XP on-hit.
  • Non-hostile NPCs (Town NPCs, critters, Target Dummies, etc.) and statue-spawned enemies don't give XP. Events, bosses, and worms give reduced XP, too.
  • Try checking the config settings; there are a lot of things there, including ways to disable XP gains.
  • Historically there were problems with secondary projectiles not giving XP, though I'm very confident that's fixed

Reporting Bugs:
If you desire to report a bug, first confirm it can be recreated; meaning performing the same actions leading up to the bug will cause it to occur again. This makes it much easier for the modder (me) to observe the anomaly firsthand. Second, also determine/confirm the suspect mod that is causing the problem; if a bug only occurs when multiple mods are active, it is likely an incompatibility problem. In that case, please also report the bug to the other mod(s)’ owner(s).
When reporting, I strongly prefer that you post an issue on my GitHub repository for my mods' tmod files; this is more organized than other methods and also allows others to see and potentially offer solutions to the issue. You can find that repository here[github.com].
Finally, I’d like to leave a reminder here that I am the sole maintainer of all my mods; if you report a bug, do not expect instant gratification! It is very likely that I’m busy releasing, and/or developing other mods and thus it will take a long time to get around to your bug. My condolences in advance…

State of development?:
The mod is now in a finished state, and for the foreseeable future I have no further plans for it.

That's strange... I just tested myself and it's working for me (Using Wand of Sparkling)
There are a lot of potential pitfalls here so I'm not exactly sure where to start...

Here's some common possibilities that I can think of off the top of my head:
- Verify the XP tooltip added to the weapon (It's at the bottom) is in fact not incrementing. There's no immediate feedback for XP on-hit.
- Friendly NPCs (Town NPCs, critters, Target Dummies, etc.) and statue-spawned enemies don't give XP. Events, bosses, and worms give reduced XP, too.
- Try checking the config settings; there are a lot of things there, including ways to disable XP gains. No idea why I would turn that off by default but who knows?
- Historically there were problems with secondary projectiles not giving XP, though I'm very confident that's fixed
- There is an extremely small chance I botched a weak reference to another one of my mods. It isn't out yet, which might the part of the potential problem since everyone else can't even get it yet.

If I think of anything else I'll get back to you.

Any details on exact loadout and active mods may help with diagnosing the problem, too!

When I use the runes on weapons, it doesn't allow the weapon to level up or gain xp. Nothing happens. Although I will say that the selected gear becomes what I most recently used the rune on. What's going on?

I lied, it just says selected gear for literally the gear I'm holding at that current time. No idea what'd happening anymore

Tested a few things, figured out that even with just this mod active, it won't work for me at all. So there's no mod conflict that keeps it from working, it just refuses to.

I believe you're experiencing expected behavior; one I should evidently put in the effort to change.
So, Runes will actually display that 'Selected Gear' tooltip if the weapon you're holding can't level up yet. All runes will do this for all weapons without leveling enabled, even if the rune is incompatible! When you (try to) use a Rune on a weapon, it should be consumed if the process works, otherwise they're incompatible. I'll try and change the tooltip logic so that it only displays that tooltip for compatible stuff.

For those who have problems with Runes not working on their stuff, make sure to have the desired item selected in your hotbar and not held by your cursor! The game will get confused if you try to do it while holding the item in your cursor!

Hi, so I'm currently running a summoners build and I put an appropriate rune on the finch staff. The staff was indeed leveling up, same with my character. However at some point it stopped visually showing their levels. It essentially froze the tooltip and damage value. The weird thing about this is that even though They don't seem to be getting xp, it'll occasionally pop up with the message of the staff and my character leveling up. To say the least, I have no idea what's going on.

Oops, my bad! I can't believe I forgot to post that bug when I found it my own playthrough!
I remember finding a workaround, you have to disable the weapon's leveling with a Blank Rune and then re-enable it with a new Rune. If that doesn't work you might have to get a new instance of the staff and 'restart'. This, of course, is extremely inconvenient at any rate, so I HIGHLY suggest getting a mod like Cheat Sheet or HERO's to spawn those items in while you're troubleshooting. Sorry for the inconvenience!

If it comes down to getting a clean staff, take note of the level your old staff got to and give yourself some Mystic XP Orbs; each one of those will instantly grant a level, so you can easily set the level of the new staff to that of the old one.

I was wondering how this mod plays with 'Weapon Enchanment'. I have been looking for a replacement for 'leveled mod.' Going to try the standalone version to see how it works, but... yeah. I look forward to seeing how your mod develops!

I imagine it should be fine with that mod, the systems should be entirely independent by all means and I don't see how they'd interfere with each other. I dunno how balancing would be affected if you use both at once, but that's to be expected with these kinds of mods.

Thought I'd add the suggestion of a compatible mod list in general - I run many dif mods currently and am wondering if half of them would cause issues? could list them all out but it'd be a hefty list to tick off hence the suggestion

Generally most mods should be fine, the XP system is supposed to able to apply to anything that counts as a weapon.
So far there are no confirmed incompatibilities, but I need to investigate a weird lag problem with Terraria Overhaul that may be related to this mod.
