Troubleshooting Guide | Skull icon not appearing / mod won't load / game crashing
I'm making this discussion to provide a list of steps someone can follow if they are having issues with the mod not loading or the skull button to open the main menu not appearing.

To start off with, determine what the actual problem is. If you right-click a character, do you see the cheat character interactions at the top? Do you see the skull icon on the right hand side of the screen, just above the map mode icons? And finally, are you experiencing crashes of any kind? Reference the section below that fits your situation.

No Skull Button and No Character Interactions
If neither of the above are appearing, it seems likely the mod is not loading at all. There are a few things that can cause this to occur.
  • To start off with, ensure you are using the proper playset in the paradox launcher and ensure the playset you are intending to use has this mod included in it.

  • Make sure you do not have a local copy of the mod (located in the mydocuments/paradoxinteractive/crusaderkingsIII/mods folder) at the same time as having the workshop version. If you have both at once (even if you are not using them in the same playset) then neither version of the mod will work, and the mod simply wont load.

  • If steps 1 and 2 have been checked and you still can't see any part of the mod working in game, then go ahead and unsubscribe and resubscribe to the mod on the steam workshop (if you are using a local version of the mod, skip this step).

  • Finally, you can check out the ck3 wiki modding page, https://ck3.paradoxwikis.com/Modding which has some useful information about troubleshooting mods that aren't properly working, give that a read through, and see if any of that can help you with the issue.

Character Interactions are there, but the Skull Button is not
If you are able to see the cheat character interactions when you right-click a character, that means the mod is loading, and there are a couple of reason why you may not be able to see the skull icon.
  • The first and easiest reason it wouldn't be showing, is if you hit the character interaction to hide the button. You can find this interaction as the very last option of the more tab of the cheat character interactions. If this is the problem, you can just use that interaction again to re-show the button.

  • The button could not be showing because another mod is over the top of the button, or is preventing the button from loading in properly. One solution that may fix this is to load this Divine Intervention mod lower in the load order, some have claimed this has fixed the issue of the skull button not appearing.

  • To further address this issue, if changing the load order isn't enough, you can disable every mod other than divine intervention, then see if the button is visible. If it does appear, then you can safely assume that one of the mods in the playset is covering up the button. Try re-enabling mods in batches, 2-3 at a time, until the button disappears again. Then continue to turn on and off mods until you can find the exact mod that is conflicting. Once you find the mod, try moving it up or down in the load order, to see if that will allow the button to show. If no matter where in the load order you put the mod, it is still covering the button, then post a link to the mod on this page, explaining that it is covering the skull button.

The game crashes while loading to main menu, or when right-clicking a character
  • If your game is crashing when loading into the main menu, this is likely a compatibility issue of some kind. The most likely reason for incompatibility is that you have Divine Intervention too high up in the load order of your play-set. The mod should be lower in the play-set to allow it to overwrite changes that other mods might make to the game, for example modded traits.

  • If you are getting a crash every time you right-click a character portrait, then it's most likely because one of the mods you are using edits the character_interaction_categories.txt file of the game. The mods that most commonly edit this mod are overhaul mods, for example the AGOT mod. There are a couple of solutions to this issue, the easiest of which is downloading one of the compatch mods, links to which are available in the description of this main Divine Intervention mod. An important note is that you need to have the overhaul mod (example AGOT) above the main Divine Intervention mod, then finally the compatch MUST be below the main Divine Intervention mod. If you don't do this, you will most likely induce more crashing in the worst case.

  • The other solution for crash on right-click, if there is no compatch available, you can go into the Divine Intervention mod folder, and delete the character_interaction_categories.txt file. The only thing this will change with the mod is that the character interactions will appear lower down, as opposed to the top of the list. But doing this should fix the crash on right-click for any mod that doesn't have a compatch. If you are using an overhaul mod that needs a compatch, feel free to tell me about it, and I'll likely make one.

If you are still having issues, post here about the issue, preferably detailing whether you can see the character interactions or not, alongside the missing skull button. You could also get the error log of your game, and send along a link for me to check that out.

Hi, I'm having issues with my character editor. It seems whenever I try to go into the traits menu, my game freezes. Sometimes it doesn't crash, tho. Sometimes it just freezes up for a long while before finally showing the traits tree. Any suggestions for this issue?

There's not really anything you can do about it, the more traits you have (from modding) the longer that it will take to generate the traits list, once it's generated then it should no longer cause lag, until you restart the game. There are a few things that I could potentially try to do to alleviate the lag, but it's just the price we pay for having dynamic access to every trait in the game, including modded ones.

I have two issues if you do not mind helping. First, when i installed colonize valyria the game crashes on the right click. Second, when i delete the text file it deleted the entire ability to do any of the right click functionality. I can still use the skull and modify my own character, but me alone. Thanks in advance if you respond.

If you delete the text file, the character interactions for my mod should be moved down to the uncategorized interaction category.

So with the AGoT mod, this is still causing crashes on the right click. Even with the text file deleted.

Doubt it's just the AGoT mod, have other people complaining about the conclaves of Valyria mod doing this or something.

Okay i "solved" this by not creating a manual save and just leting the game create an autosave; this appears to solve it.
Hello, I can't seem to be able to pin anyone.

I click Interactions On and the cheat options expand under Divine Intervention in the interaction menu. But when I try to Pin my courtiers, there's nobody there when I click pinned characters in the skull menu.

You have to either select the pinned character using the select character button, or check the list view checkbox.
