yes, combining 2 mediocre mods is bound to work
I'm pretty new to modding Terraria, and Calamity was recommended as one of the top mods to play. At the time I never heard of Thorium so I'm just now coming across it and wondering what the mod is about. While I can't yet hold an opinion on Thorium since I have never played it, I can say that Calamity is anything but mediocre and I am convinced you're simply trolling.
calamity is boring, but thorium is pretty good

It's interesting how the 2nd most popular content mod of all time, and one that dates back to the tAPI era of Terraria modding is already forgotten about just because they took their time to port (and improve) the mod.

Thorium is ancient, hell, they're the oldest content mod that's still around and being updated to this day. And for the most part they've stuck to their roots ever since as a vanilla expansion mod.

That said... Thorium and Cal have *some* support for each other but it's only to make sure features like the Oceans do not overlap (Cal also did some changes to Thorium bosses IIRC), but as others have said don't expect a balanced experience.

Thorium is a Vanilla expansion focused mod, Cal is effectively a total conversion that changes alot of underlying balance and features of Terraria and thus doesn't play well with alot of other mods.

I did a run-through of Thorium + Calamity a few months before Thorium's 1.4 update came out, so my experience may be outdated, but my experience was that, outside of an invisible tile bug in the Sulfurous Seas, they mostly... work together. Having done a mage play through up to Exomechs/Calamitus, there are oddities because of how the two are balanced, but I didn't run into any major bugs.
Game play wise, I found Thorium gear will randomly spike up in effectiveness compared to calamity stuff, and Thorium weapons in general just hit harder than Calamity gear half the time (I was still using weapons from the Primordials all the way to the 3rd/4th last boss before I stopped that run), though armor lagged behind after a certain point. Calamity really wants its own style of balancing and readjustments to vanilla, and Thorium clearly is meant to match what you would expect from normal Terraria.
I would not recommend doing a fused play through as a first run, it will mess with how Calamity wants to be run if that's the experience you care about. If you're determined to do it anyways, I would advise against Thrower/Bard/Healer as those classes will essentially get nothing past Moon Lord/Primordials and you'll be stuck with the same equipment for a lot of bosses.
I mean they technically work together in the sense that you can have them both be on at the same time, but both of the mods have highly different balance so they can't really mesh very well

I'd say Thorium ends at Moon Lord, because whether you beat Moon Lord or not, you can still fight the easier foe: The Primordials (+an Expert Part 2), the final boss of Thorium. From then on, you can use any of the weapons that you craft from them for a while longer. Maybe not to Yharon and the Witch, but pretty damn far due to high DPS from your chosen class. The Abyss generates on one side and another Ocean-themed biome generates on the other side.

Thorium hasn't any mods, official or otherwise, to add on to Calamity, and vice-versa. So most of the weaponry becomes irrelevant after some of the post-Moon Lord bosses. Or maybe not.

this is my new all time favorite developer comment and I will absolutely be playing them both together.

You should think about the meaning of your existence with such questions.

However I don't know if it's updated to 1.4. Also in terms of generation as far as I know the ocean biomes both mod adds don't overlap each other as they are generated in each side of the world. (Sulfurous Sea on the Dungeon side and Aquatic Depths on the opposite).

I hope it gets updated, I like both mods individually and hope to play with both of them at one point

Thorium accessories get cancelled I think but I'm not sure which. When I tried playing both of them my infinite flight accessory wasn't working. I don't know about calamity weapons tho.

Unless you want immersion-breaking edgy anime style 10-meter-long swords, ditch Calamity and go for Thorium.

Short answer: Yes, Thorium and Calamity ARE compatible.
However, the main issue I noticed when playing is the world generation can be a bit buggy and some biomes would override others. But this issue is present even in Calamity alone, so I suggest checking the world with a world viewer to verify that every biome is generated properly. The most frequent issues are: sunken sea (Calamity) overlaps with the dungeon, the lab is not generated in the Sunken Sea
Also, note, that Thorium content ends earlier than Calamity.
Moreover, there's really A TON of loot with both mods installed, so inventory sometimes fills up almost instantaneously.

But, overall, the combination is pretty fun.
