terraria afk pets Boss Hunter

Can anyone explain to me how terraria afk pets Boss Hunter works? I tried to give him the Expert Item as a trophy, the actual trophy, the Master's relic, I even tried the Master's item, he didn't accept any, does anyone know what I have to do?
