If you get stuck in a crowd, trying to swing is an absolute mess, since you'll always get cockblocked by friendly units, and have no way to stab the guys in front of you to get out of the mosh pit.
That's why I always carry a two-hander weapon for emergency situations and sieges.
I'm certain I've seen NPCs in battle couching with different spears, but I can't swear to that, since things were rather hectic at the time. This whole thing feels like a huge oversight to me and it just bugs me.
