Replacing Estates with Factions...
I'm not a big fan of the mod using Estates for the state republics as its a mechanic more suited to the monarchy than a equal-before-the-law republic so I've been working on implimenting three factions, mirroring the Merchant Republic factions, but with unique modifiers.

The three factions I've settled on are

  • Aristocracy Faction
  • Plutocracy Faction
  • Theocracy Faction

There's a set for the Australian/Canadian states, American states and Mexican states. Australia and Canada share set because their systems of government are practically the same.

Each of the groups have their own modifiers not duplicated by the others which are currently being decided.

Originally I was thinking of using them as political parties but then opted against as that's something that comes in the Victoria II era, but they are influenced by modern politics. Currently, from my understanding of modern politics, I have the Aristocracy Faction (DIP) more geared towards "left-wing", with the Plutocracy Faction (ADM) more of the in the center and the Theocracy Faction (MIL) geared to be the "right-wing".

I'll post more about this as I continue to work on it.

I know I've thought before about how the Estates aren't quite a perfect fit for American politics (if nothing else, we lack a formal aristocracy). This sounds really interesting, and I look forward to hearing more about this in the future.

I thought it might be a better feature than the estates because the estates are dumb when you are a republic, which most of the mod is spent playing republics. My original intention was to modify the estates to be like political parties but the more I played with the estates they just don't balance right for the mod.

The Aristocracy Faction is meant to mimic the informal aristocracy that comes from years of service in govenrment, and often those who spend years in government want privileges and powers denied to the others. So while it isn't a formal aristocracy of the time period, it is a closer alternative.

I've been working on the faction events and I've decided to rename the Aristocracy faction to the Bureaucracy faction and I've settled on each faction having 8 events each. And like the normal faction events they'll be put on the same appropirate 3-year event pulse timer.
