Venator glass cannons? (answered)
Now i am still learning the mod and so far evreything seems to fit about right with regards to durability of ships and their roles. But i feel like Venators might be a bit too fragile given their critical role as a backbone capital ship?

For example i have found that they can not withstand any sort of sustained ship to ship combat (almost as fragile as the aclamator) now if this is intended and the venator is meant to be more of a support/carrier ship that's fine. Just found it suprising that it seemed so fragile compared to even republic support ships like the aclamator.

Venator role - carrier, not battlecruiser

They are nerfed in this version of Clone wars. Compared to republic at war where its classified as a capital ship, here its just a frigate. Albiet heavy frigate.

That is not exactly true. The RAW venator was just absurdly overpowered. In FOTR, as per lore, a venator is a carrier with combat capabilities but are not intended to get into a slugging match with other vessels of a similar size or lots of other vessels. The republic has other vessels which can front line better like the invincibles, praetors, victories etc. The problem is not with the ship but that you are using for a role they are not really suited for.

Alrighty, i was not aware of that as in pretty much all other mods i have seen the venator repersented in it was a bit less fragile then in this one. Thanks for the information.

Edit: any tips on how to use it effectively? normally i would use it as a backline carrier but with the way thrawns and this mod handles shields starfighter tactics are a bit more tricky to handle.

I prefer to have the venators in the second line of my fleet. They give out a decent amount of firepower but they need something more tanky in front of them to draw the AI fire. Also coordinate your bombers with the target of your venators to take that ship down even more faster.

a front row of victories with a second row of venators works rather well when you get victories later on. Until then invicibles are a cheap tank and praetors are really good but expensive. Also as the republic stuff like the dreadnaught heavy cruiser, aquintens, and carracks are useful to add into a fleet.

bombers are still really good in this mod even without shield pierce. You just need to group them up and focus on one target at a time with them. They are additional DPS and not the point and click adventure of other mods.

one thing you can do if you want is edit the files to toughen them up. because i agree although I'm well aware they were mostly considered excellent carriers they were still often the Republic's main ship of the line even after the victories came out because they weren't able to build nearly as many as the venators. I even increased the cost to produce them to keep it balanced but i increased shields and hardpoint durability a small percentage. just a thought because at the end of the day they still are Star Destroyers

How'd you edit it? I've done it before on other mods, but when I look at the XML files with the venator, I can't find the shield or hardpoint hitpoints

Yea the way they do their mods are a little more complicated I believe because it allows them more freedom of modification and so forth. Anyways the shield points and hardpoint hit points are in two different files. Look in the template files for most ships general characteristics including the Venator. Its under the frigates template file (might seem strange I know) so Data/XML/Units and you'll find it, just keyword search Venator in the file and it should take you right there. for hardpoints just go to Data/XML/Hardpoints/Hardpoints_Republic then keyword search Venator and bingo you'll find all its hardpoints. You will have to edit the health for each individual hitpoint. You can use this method for all units even ground units. I modified the A6 juggernauts proton torpedoes to do more damage becuase for some reason they don't do hardly anything in my game. Oh one more thing, some units are variants of the main template file unit like the Acclamator variants, so for those you have to go to Data/XML/Units/Fotr then look through the unit files and try keywords to find the specific units your looking for. You'll have to do this to edit the squadrons of the Venator for example.

All that said this is a wonderful mod and they've done an amazing job so I caution you against making to many changes in case you wreck the balance. As I mentioned earlier I increased the cost of the Venator roughly the same percentage I increased its shield and Hardpoint health.

One last tip, backup your files before and maybe your modded files as well, however I would instead make notes about where and what you edited specifically because if there is an update you might lose your changes and you don't want to copy and paste your modded files back in because it might undo the update or patch implemented.

Have fun!
