A Basic Guide
Additional Edit: I've been told the game has been more or less overhauled. Ergo a lot of this guide is possibly out of date? Maybe I'll try tackling it again in the near future! In the mean time, I recommend this Let's Play: https://docs.google.com/document/d/10oMAINnMzf8B7sjjw3-SOg9L4UahFVARpjoLcE7bCDc/edit?usp=sharing

Edit: I'm now post Odd-Eye! Geshp was A LOT of fun. Odd-Eye was a difficult fight. the final two fights though? Well, that's all posted at the bottom of the guide. This'll probably be my final update.

SO! I'm writing this to answer some basic questions that I had while playing the game. To put into context, I'm currently at the Zalbard fight. Attempted it, and the game crashed because of non-computer related reasons. (Love that Gargoyles are still in the fight, and in fact respawn. nice meme moment - but we'll see after I actually do the fight)

This isn't a comprehensive guide to find every exact Dark Matter, Gold Dust, secret items, etc. Maybe it will, one day (Don't count on it.). But for now: This is more for ... basic things.

Classes

I'm not gonna discuss the unpromotes. Cap level is 20, if you get enough to level up again, you won't. nothing happens, you wasted the experience.

The basics have already been mentioned in other places, but I'll do what I think wasn't really mentioned. For what it's worth, I did these class changes with the 4 Creed recruits, and ho boy i lowkey regret it. The 4 special promote items actually change those 4 classes A LOT!

Hero It's Bowie. He's great. That's all that's really need to be said.

Mystic is when your priest uses the Vigor Ball. Mystic is effectively a Monk, but more combat focused. Mystic doesn't learn new spells, just the 3 the characters have going into it. This class is good for a back-up healer, 2nd wave smasher. I ENTIRELY regret giving Karna the Vigor Ball, as ... she doesn't have a heal spell in her original three spells. Aid (Detox) can heal, but only if it actually cures something. Regrets have been made. Upside, they have access to the "Ring" weapons that Magus's also have. They're attack oriented usable weapons vs the Cleric/Wizard defense/healing oriented usable staves

Cleric is the basic promotion version of priests. Clerics will learn Aura, no matter what (Yes even Sarah) Every staff has a usable effect. So use them every turn to gain easy xp.

Pegasus Knight is when your Knight uses the Pegasus Wing, same as vanilla. They gain a weakness to Air damage. Otherwise, somewhat unchanged. But big difference is the basic promotion version.

Red Knights take the place of the original centaur paladins. Red Knights learn 3 attacking spells, and extremely rapidly i may add. Two elemental, and Missile. They aren't full casters by any means, with mana pools not extremely large, but useful in a pinch.

Paladin is when your Warrior uses the Warrior's Pride. No longer a Baron, the Paladin is now a support buffer. Randolf learned both Boost and Attack, before he even had the mana necessary to cast them! Pretty Solid front-line, with something to do if they slow down. KEEP IN MIND THEY DON'T GET THE EXTRA MOVEMENT, MAKE SURE TO KEEP THAT GROUND AXE ON THEM (You get it in Hassan).

Barbarian is the basic promotion. They ... they're effectively vanilla gladiators, just can double a lot.

Magus is when your Apprentice uses the Secret Book. The Magus ... isn't good (in my opinion). Raze is an EXTREMELY strong spell. I'll discuss it more in the spell section. They also learn ONE summoning spell. And that's it. Oh and the Ring Weapons.

Wizard, oh man Wizard. I love them. Which is strange, because I don't even have one in my party, keeping Magus Tyrin instead of Wizard Kazin. Wizards keep their original three spells, AND THEN EVENTUALLY LEARN A SUMMON SPELL! Before I benched Kazin, he learned Loki (Apollo) as a Wizard, which I was under the impression only Magus's get.

Sorcerer is Rick's promotion class. This class is by far the most utility class, with Aid (Detox), Slow, Freeze, AND Aura! No longer is Rick (in my opinion) a better Chester. (and honestly I'm still not even sure what his weapon is? Like, his character model has a staff in combat, but I can't equip him with one). He's insane, I love him.

Ninja is Slade's promotion. I'm not sure how I feel about Ninja. The spells have been drastically altered to debuff spells. Muddle, Sleep, and newcomer Poison. I'm not sure how I feel about Ninja in all honesty. You get the Gisarme fairly early (In Pacalon), but then getting to Tristran it's immediately outclassed by the generic sword at the store. Gisarme can still execute, so I'm keeping it but ... I'm not sure. He's probably on my future swap list.

Phoenix is Peter's promotion. Peter learns Blaze in unpromote. Peter is Peter, he's still a powerhouse that can ♥♥♥♥ UP certain monsters.

Dragon Is Kiwi's promotion. No longer a Monster, he's now a mother ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Dragon. He gets a spell, a breath weapon, which I believe only does cold damage? Haven't seen anything other than that. He also actually gains HP, so he's not ♥♥♥♥♥♥ at 20hp.

Bird Knight Luke and Screech. For some reason Screech is now Luke's lover? Nifty. Anyways, Screech is more frontline warrior focus, whereas Luke is spellsword. Incredibly strong, probably the first time I've used Luke outside of a punishment run. Learns Raze, Blast, and Attack.

Sniper & Werewolf Since I've mentioned literally every other class (i've encountered so far) I may as well mention them. Gerhalt is a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ brick ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ that throws his hands around like a mother ♥♥♥♥♥♥. I stuck with Janet (Who you get instead of May) and she is a glass cannon of death. Silver Tank was removed, so Elric and Janet can only be Snipers.

Brass Gunner I ... I actually forgot about this class when I was typing this. Adding this as an afterthought. ... I never use Rohde. He's kinda lame, and I hated Brass Gunners in vanilla, and from what I can tell, they didn't change much. Whoops.

Magic

Almost all magic costs have been raised. Heal 1 is 4MP, Heal 2 8MP. Most spells usually have a level multiplier for the cost. IE Blaze is 4, 8, 12, 16. This isn't universal, but it applies to A LOT of the spells. ALSO! HIGHER LEVEL SPELLS DON'T DO MORE DAMAGE UNLESS IT'S A STATIC DAMAGE SPELL. HIGHER LEVELS MEANS BIGGER CASTING RANGE. Now let's jump in!

Elemental Magic
Elemental damage is strong against certain types of enemies, see below. Ranks change their distance, as mentioned above. Rank 1 is melee, but with a 5 spread (Meaning you can only hit 4 enemies). Rank 2 is traditional casting range, 2 spaces out, with a 5 spread. Rank 3 is 3 spaces out, 5 spread. and Rank 4 is 3 spaces out, but with a 13 target spread (Like Aura/Boost 2)

Fire is strong against "Fighting" enemies
Ice is strong against "Archer" types
Air is strong against "Flying" types
Lightning is strong against "Healing/(Maybe all casters)" types.

Buffing Magic
Fairly unchanged

Healing Magic
I'm honestly unsure of how much spells heal in this game? Each time I've healed, it's fully healed. The only exceptions have been when I used items, which presumably have a fixed amount. Maybe Healing Magic is associated with Power, same as Elemental Magic? Not certain

Fixed Damage Magic
Raze is a melee ranged, single target spell. It does fixed damage, doesn't matter the type of enemy. Rank 1 is ~30, 2 is ~70, 3 is ~90, and 4 is ... TBD.
Missile is the other fixed Damage Magic. It's a 3 range, single target. Slightly weaker than Raze. Didn't make notes on it's damage, so I'll hopefully update this if I remember.

Debuffing Magic
Ninja specific, so far, Sleep, Muddle, and Poison. Sleep and Muddle are vanilla, Poison is Poison.

Items
As I mentioned earlier, this isn't gonna be an in-depth guide on where to find everything. I just wanted to point out some basics that I didn't realize, but figure were nice to know.

Silver Ankh is a healing trinket. It's technically equip-able, but that's pointless as it does nothing stat-wise. I'm gonna guess it's a limitation of base SF2, because it's effectively a Healing Drop, but unlimited uses. USE THIS EVERY TURN YOU CAN'T DO ANYTHING ELSE.

Ring of Balance is a damage trinket. Same as the Ankh, pointless to equip. Based on notes from the comment section, it does a flat 18 damage. I only used it early game, so I thought it halved the enemies' life. Useful early game.

Armor There are Gloves, Shields, and Capes. Gloves raise your power, Shields raise your defense, and Capes help with Agi. I'm not gonna tell you how to use these. They're nifty, can buy them from the weapons store. ... yep.

World Changes

Secret Elf Village is now the Dwarven Village, but Dwarven Blacksmith wasn't available. I believe it's still in vanilla location.

Ketto has been removed (Sad because I've based a DND city there once)

First darkness cave lost it's treasure chest, as I said earlier, no Silver Tank.

Second darkness cave has been removed entirely!

I think that's the end of my basics guide. Again I'm only up to Zalbard, so I still have about 1/3-1/4 of the game left. Still a lot of time to change and add. But to the 753 current subscribers, please feel free to add anything. This is also my first time writing a guide, but apologies if the formatting is poopoo.

Post Cameela Edit/addition
New Class!
Summoner: Surprisingly despite Taya existing in game, Taya's class/position within Mitula's shrine is replaced with Grim. Summoners are caster who can only do summons. Summons hit real hard against single target, no AoE anymore. ... Pretty useful, I use him.

New Items!
Gold Ankh: Restores mana (if used). Only about ~15 mana, but still nice! Grim comes with it, so he kept it in my game.

World Changes!
Dwarven Blacksmith is located post Nazca ship crash, where the monastery is. First screen is the blacksmith, second screen is the monastery.

Blacksmith!
So, when you approach the blacksmith, he asks what material you would like to use. You say X, Y, or Z. He then says "OK, here's your selection!"

Ho boy I do not have the patience to go through every single item at this time. EDIT: I. .. I did it, took ~3 hours since I'm stupid and didn't change my team around to optimize getting items. This is the most work I've done for homework that I wasn't graded on.

Mithril: weapons, ho boy are there weapons. Alright here we go, my notes didn't fully include what level all the spells are ... and I'm not here to do ALL your homework. If you see a ?, it means I didn't check.
Carbon Arrow: It's just Stronk.
Magic Arrow: It casts Missle 2?
Sage Ring: Mana restoration for 1 person.
Chaos Ring: Stronk.
Thunder Ring: It casts bolt (level 3?)
Holy Ring: It casts Aura (Level 2?)
Titurel: It casts Aid (Not sure what level)
Oberyn: It casts Attack (Not sure what level)
Defender: It casts Boost 1?
Venom: It casts Poison
Knockout: Not sure if it casts Sleep or Muddle. I assume it was Sleep, but it failed and I didn't care enough... I tested this one near the end of my 3 hour testing so I stopped caring
Breaker: It casts Slow 1?
Chaos Staff: Stronk.
Arcane Scepter: passively restores 15 mana!
Dragon Staff: It casts Kiwi's original breath weapon. It did a lot of damage.
Levanter: It casted a single target blaze spell. I believe Blaze 3 based on the animation.
Engulf Sword: It casts Death 2
Angelic Sword: It casts heal 2 or 3 and +5 Def

Gold Dust: Static accessories. Power, Protect, Quick, Running, Life rings along with new comer Fairy Ring. These are pretty much the discount accessories compared to Dark Matter.
Power Ring: +30 Att
Protect Ring: +30 Def
Quick Ring: +30 Agi
Running Ring: +3 movement
Life Ring: +20 Def, Passive 10 heal
Fairy Ring: +15 Att/Def

Dark Matter: These are the suped up accessories that this mod has added.
Dark Gauntlet: +30 Att/Def
Dark Shield: +60 Def
Dark Ring: +60 Att
Dark Cloak: +40 Agi, +2 movement
Dark Amulet: +40 Def, Passive 20 heal

Long Overdue post Odd-Eye Edit/addition
I actually got to this point about 6ish months ago. Odd-Eye&Geshp, and all those that follow were a good challenge. Geshp had fun mechanics to learn.

Around this time you get May, who is a pegasus archer, I think? I personally love May so I used the ♥♥♥♥ outta her.

But the Kane/Dark Sol fight... As well as the Galam/Zeon fights...

So Galam can no longer be killed independently from Zeon. You wanna down Zeon, you gotta kill Galam.

Every.
Time.

On top of that, (if memory serves) you gotta get past the new enemies that are unique to this fight! Can't even turtle and slowly aggro mobs for Galam's portion. Because instead everything is within reach.

I decided I'd do the "basement" fight. Which is Kane&Dark Sol at the same time.

And the idea to give both of them double actions? No me gusta. Unfortunately, since I play on a computer with more than one hard drive, and I don't want Sega Genesis running on my SSD, I have difficulty saving, and thus couldn't do the one thing I thought I could do to get past the "easier of the two fights"... Save scumming. I even had enough gold to train each of my force up to 30... And still got my back broken like Bane does to Batman.

My Final Thoughts

I don't think I'm going to complete the romhack, even though I'm literally at the eleventh hour. I liked a lot of the changes. Some... Not so much. It seemed to draw on Fire Emblem a lot with different angles of attack with some fights. Which works on Fire Emblem, since you can rearrange your groups.

If you want a challenge, a solid 8/10. You can ignore some of the edgy dialogue/book comments.
If you want a "story that connects the first and second game?" Then yeah solid 9/10.

But if you want a balanced game, where you won't need to save scum a bit and/or a guide like this? 4/10.

I'm probably gonna play this again... Someday in the future when I'm not balancing 3 other games and an MMO.

This is a great guide... Ketto comes up much later in the game, along with the Second Darkness Cave.

It is where the old Pegasus Wing was in the vanilla game.

The Sea Orb is in the battle to save the archer Elric. It is on the battle map and therefore completely miss-able. After the fight save Elric, go to the right side of the lake at the top of the map. Go to the highest tile on the ride side, face the lake, and search. Voila, Sea Orb.
