Black Mesa

Black Mesa

Black Mesa: Military
My review
An excellent mod for Black Mesa! This is not a remake of Opposing Force; instead, you play as another HECU soldier who starts off committing war crimes with his comrades (killing the scientists) and eventually embarks on a journey for his own survival, occasionally aided by fellow soldiers. Well, "aided"... The soldiers accompanying you are more for atmosphere than anything else;they're practically useless, lol.

Night vision is very useful, and fortunately there's no time limit! I like the fact that the whole screen isn't just lit up green, but that there's a "tunnel effect".

Action (including some "large-scale" battles in open areas), exploration, a few puzzles, solid level design... What’s especially great is how seamlessly it intertwines with the original Black Mesa game. Some scenes will feel very familiar to anyone who's played Black Mesa before.

Now for the negatives:

Game crashes, map glitches, or progression-blocking issues where a script doesn’t trigger, forcing you to reload an earlier save. Thankfully, these bugs are rare and don’t ruin the overall experience.
NPCs aren’t very talkative; many are downright silent.
The pathfinding for your HECU comrades is pretty bad. Sometimes they’ll get stuck in front of a door you have to open for them, freeze at obstacles, or stop following you if you move too quickly.

That said, I keep in mind that this is a mod made by an amateur team, and considering the overall quality of their work, these few issues are just minor details!

In short, if you liked Black Mesa, I highly recommend playing Black Mesa: Military!
I completed the game in 4h35 on the version from 01/10/2025.

Thanks for this review, when I read something like that, I am glad that I was working on this mod, because you summed up exactly what's this mod about and what it was meant to be! It's a shame that you encountered so many errors, but with future updates hopefully the mod will be even better as is our goal with each release. There were 8 releases in total, you can see the history of releases on "Change Notes" section tab at the top of this workshop page. I'm glad you enjoyed it!
