Review on Chapters 1-7 alpha WIP
I just bought Black Mesa and started to play this mod on 02/01/2021.

I was done through the levels of black mesa where you still find some marines around, and I felt like it was a good moment to stop and play from a different perspective =)

Lucky for me I found this. It's a good mod, that needs polishing since it's rough in the edges.

I've very much enjoyed playing this to give me some extra hours of gameplay of an already great game.

I just wish some of the bugs I came across didn't happen at all, for example:

* Freeman skin didn't load properly and instead it was a random security guard... Only after watching bolloxed walkthrough I realized i came across Freeman in the hallway.

* The previous error also showed up when fighting the Special Black Ops team. The male where loaded as regular marine grunts and the female had a texture error that says ERROR/SUCCESS. I had to review bolloxeds walkthrough again to make sure those grunts weren't glitching and were actual black ops...

* The (Marine) grunts were glitching, because if you cross an area where it says [ loading... ] and come back to search for a grunt that got stuck, when you come back the grunt visualises you as the enemy (probably resets some vars to the original black mesa values?)

* Turrets visualise you and the grunts differently, depending on the situation and the world interaction. So sometimes turret shoot grunts, or turret shoots you but not the grunts.

* Gargantua with laser air support didn't work out... air support was off, I was stuck for a good hour trying to find a solution to the problem... found a way by rushing out and leaving it be.

* Grunts (Marines, HECU) are generally dumb and run straight to the danger. Now, this is a problem even on black mesa, but at least you can bs yourself into thinking "it's just a security guard, they are trying their best rofl". But an USMC should know better than run with guns blazing into a room full of enemies. They don't even shoot the barnacles !
Some AI treatment is in place.

* Dialogs are very scripted and there is no way to interact with your team (the ones following you). An improvement on that area would be much appreciated.

* No areas with non-combat-but-rich interaction made the mod feel very "doom/quake" much more than half life. Add some puzzles and some funny moments that don't involve shooting. Some examples:
- using your gun as a tool, shooting something to activate something else.
- playing with weight, physics! maybe an elevator that's broken and needs some weight?
- At the beginning of the 1st chapter, you can see some posters of the ranking officers. It would be cool to use that information that seems to be the only important thing you read on this playthrough for a quiz in a puzzle.


I feel this mod could be so much more...

I feel like the black ops part could be way more complex... you could find yourself being captured by the black ops, and then, while being questioned (because you saw Dr. Freeman with your own eyes) you could listen to some classified conversations from the black ops team. Later on you escape (some Xen destroy the interrogation room somehow). And fighting your way out in more than one chapter... getting some radio contact with your team on the surface, and finally a grand finale with your teammates helping you taking out the rest of the black ops team.
Later on, you resume the other chapters when you need to leave the facility and kill your way out =)

Needless to say, I'm very critic in general, so don't feel that this is a bad review. On the contrary. For something that's bad, I wouldn't even bother writing a review. I just hope that my feedback and maybe some of my ideas give you other ideas and some perspective in order to follow through and make your mod the best it can be =)
