EMI Generator: 100% lost.
Hey,

Ive lsot my nuclear reactor in my main playtrough due to a EMI site, which got me thinking doing some test runs. My setup was following:

2 Standard reactors,
2 Type V Big reactors.
All Reactors are fully fueled, standard Rods
the First reactor does not have Control Rod upgrade, the second does. For both.

All reactors are set to 90% Power and are fully fueled, provided with up to 3 cooling towers and 2 turbines for max effeciency.

Now I spawned either a mech cluster or a EMI quest site.
As soon as the cluster lands or the Site is generated, the console shuts off, leaving me helpless and the reactor to do its own things.

The smaller reactors, due to them probaly being tiny in compare, did start a self shutdown due to extreme Core temperature. Both Reactors shut down in time. Even the one without control rods just seconds before blowing up, but it did it.

Now the V Type reactors both blew up. They did both initiate a shutdown sequence, but deo to being fully fueld, on almost max power and suddenly loosing all 3 cooling towers at once left them with no chance to shut down in time, leading to a core meltdown in both cases.

As EMI starts, I have no control over the console anymore, either is it impossible (if not accepting the quest on my own), to prepare for such a event as it simply spawns in your face. Now that Mech clusters on Hihger diff. with high wealth are spammed on top of a the play like rain in the tropical forest, the chance for EMI generators to being set are high too.

While I do have a shuttle with a Antigrain Warhead ready to launch in such cases (to save my food), it is always to late for the reactor, even when immidantly starting the bombing run.

How do I prepare or handle EMI generators? Am I just fubbernucked in that situation? Do I have to have multiple Cores ready if one blows up? Thanks to the mod Reinforced walls I am able when properly build to fully catch a meltdown event without damage other then the walls, but even then the radiation, loosing power, rods and material while leaving the base defensless against the spammed mech raids is frustrating.

i haven't played with the dlc much, i made the reactors when the only thing that would kill power was solar flares or your own mistakes managing your power, but the big reactor is also supposed to be very dangerous when you're running it at high power, if you want to stay safe stick to smaller cores, or just have backup consoles and cooling so there's less chance they randomly lose power on the net before the core does and or add easily accessible switches to cut power to the core, always have an operator ready to manage it too, like have them sleep near the console or switches, if you're playing with a massive reactor you need all of your redundancy and safety to be up to scratch, or just enjoy the fireworks and load the autosave

hard to do on comitment. See the problem with EMI generators is, that you cant use the console anymore, there is no cooling working anymore, all cooling tpyes need power, even the water, there is no excess emergency water power nothing. When EMI hits, everything is off, also the reactor, there is no need to cut power that moment. Its all off.

Cant you update it to shut down immidantly like in a solar flare when the event "EMI Field" is active? Should be possible?

Its better then just having hands bound not being able to do anyhing. Even the small reactors were close to meltdown with EMI events.
Or is there something I can do in XML ?
Like, search for "auto shutdown" and add EMI or smt like that.

i just tested the emi dynamo and it switches off the powernet the same way solar flares do with 1 building shutting down at a time, the more buildings you have the longer it takes for everything to shut down, and my core tends to be shutdown before all of my cooling systems are, probably why i never had a problem with it blowing up, but i'll see if i can change the solar flare check to check for any kind of power net shutdown instead for the next update

Hmm I will run some tests again maiby something I overlooked, a calble thats not connected. Ill reload pre backups and look in it again later

Alright I tested everything agian, also reloaded a old safe and it seems that in test and old safe I had a graphical bug both times showing me that the Rod upgrade of the Power plant was isntalled by actually it wasnt as double clicking it made somone install it. So while I though the upgrade is installed it wasnt. Installing and checking that it is installed made the reactor turn off in time no matter what, even fully fueled with MOX.

So sorry for wasting time on that discussion for something low as a graphical bug, but its good we got it cleared if it happens for anyone else.

what exactly was the graphics bug, the upgrade should be greyed out if its not installed, and double clicking it wouldn't mark it for install it would toggle it on then off from both clicks

When debug mode enabled yes it automaticly does it, yet in my no dev mode playtrough it showed as installed, and when I cliked on it again somone come and isntalled it.
It was just showing as "already installed". I checked the console when clicking on it agian but it didnt tell me. Maiby just some 1 in a Millionen thing that happens with 200 mods installed.
