I've been getting some crashes whenever stuff happens in Scandinavia (so far it's crashed when Germany declared on Denmark and when the Soviets declared on Finland).

Have you thought about making central Borneo and Papua New Guinea impassable (they effectively were in this era)? In addition you could think about making the central Congo impassable too.

Can you also include the Gobi Desert to be impassable? The Japanese AI loves to burn their troops there...

No terrain is impassable all it takes is the building of infastructure which you can do in HOI. No land on this planet is totally impassable passbale with low loss of equipment and life no but passable and HOI makes you pay for thatalready to.
