strange, I was unable to reproduce the problem just now. Could be a (rare) bug in the game itself. Does it happen every time you load the level, or only this once?

In any case, clearly that jump goes beyond the scope of what I consider reasonable skill level, but maybe those that are truly exceptional at the game will appreciate the challenge (or maybe it's easier with thruster boosting motions, idk). Regardless, I'll leave it up to those that can complete this level to rate it appropriately :P
both approaches you mentioned will work, if you get the timing right. however there is no simple button-combo that will guarantee completion of the jump; you must use your boosters to 'fly' the car.
the jumping while going straight approach cannot be executed perfectly, which is probably the source of your frustration. if you don't tilt full 90° on the first roll, you will have an easier time finishing the manuever. however this will land you facing the wrong way along the track.
going off the diagonal without jumping requires less manuevering over all, but is not so easy to reduce to a simple set of steps.
if you're stuck, i recommend the diagonal method, because once you get a feel for it, you'll realize that its actually easier this way.
