Cathedral of Christ the Saviour (World Wonder)

When the invading forces of Napoleon retreated from Russia, Tsar Alexander I commissioned the construction of a cathedral to show gratitude for the divine blessings that saved the country. Thus, the construction of the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour started in 1812, though Alexander I did not live long enough to witness its completion and consecration in 1883. One year before its completion, the prominent musician Tchaikovsky debuted his masterpiece 1812 Overture outside the unfinished church. The dome of the cathedral was gilded with the new technique of gold electroplating (instead of the traditional mercury gilding), and the interior of the cathedral housed delicate illustrations from famous Russian painters. During Soviet times, Stalin ordered the demolition of the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour to make space for the proposed Palace of the Soviets. The construction of the Palace of the Soviets was halted due to a lack of funds, the flooding of the Moskva River, and the outbreak of World War II. With the end of Soviet rule, a second Cathedral of Christ the Saviour was rebuilt on the original site.
