Description
Overview
A collection of Tomes inspired by the Rogue class from AoW3, themed around in flanking, blinding, deception, debuffs and shadow magic. In addition to paying homage to a classic AoW archetype I also wanted to enable a Shadow Affinity playstyle that is independent from necromancy and ice magic.

Features
  • Tome of Whispers - tier 1 - Employ infiltrators to sabotage and spy on your enemies. Specialize in underhanded Flanking attacks. Features the Lesser Shadow Stalker and Cutthroat and Charlatan units.
  • Tome of Vice - tier 2 - Embrace crime and depravity to exploit your people and subvert your enemies with sinful temptation. Features the Succubus unit.
  • Tome of Darkness - tier 3 - Wield darkness to conceal your forces and torment your foes. Specialize in preying on isolated enemies. Features the Shadow Stalker unit.

Compatibility
No changes to any of the base game .rpk files.

The Tome of Darkness includes the Veil of Darkness spell which I copied from the Tome of the Cold Dark. I have made a small optional mod for the Tome of the Cold Dark to replace this skill with a new one and rename the Tome to make it purely ice themed. Using this mod is entirely up to preference, both are fully functional as standalone mods.

The Cutthroat unit evolves into the Shade unit from the Ways of War DLC. For users without the DLC the Cutthroat will show that it has an Evolve property but it will not be functional in game, and it will instead gain the standard rank-up bonus at Legend Rank. This is the only part of the mod that requires the DLC, everything else should work without it.

Integrations
This mod is now integrated with Komogi's Unique Unit Rank Bonuses mod! To enable the integration you simply need to have both this mod and Unique Unit Rank Bonuses enabled, this will cause the Cutthroat, Succubus and Shadow Stalkers to have unique rank bonuses.

Known Issues
  • The "Infiltrate Defenders" siege project combat enchantment has some issues. In an offensive siege it will work but it will not display until after the first turn of combat. This is a workaround for an issue with the turn sequence of the auto-spell that triggers the unit to spawn. And I've received reports that in a defensive siege it does not work at all.
    (Whole ability probably needs a rework but I don't have an ETA for when this will happen)
  • If this mod is causing the Tome of Shades from the WoW DLC to be replaced then you are either stuck on an older version of this mod, or you have a leftover backup .zip file from an older version of this mod somewhere in the mod folder. I have removed the backup file on my end but this will not automatically remove it from your workshop folders. So this problem will unfortunately need to be fixed on your end; my recommendation is to check the folder (Steam\steamapps\workshop\content\1669000\2989849682) to check if it has a "Rogue_Tomes_v1_backup" folder and delete it. Or just delete the entire mod folder and redownload a fresh copy of the mod. Sorry for the inconvenience!

  • Lord Vectra and Shadow Rytes for their playtesting and feedback for the new version.
  • Komogi for creating the Unique Unit Rank Bonuses integration and Daniel for figuring out how to set up optional dependencies which made it possible to do without a separate compatibility mod.

Two other bits of feedback/bug reporting:

* Nightfall sometimes only hits a single enemy when cast. It seems to function correctly when it repeats, but I haven't done a careful study.
* It's a bit ambiguous what "units of the same kind" means for Probe Weakness.

Wanted to thank you for the wonderful tomes, and also note one small issue.

The second of the Shrouded Altar's benefits states "+5 Research Post". I think it's supposed to say "+5 Knowledge".

You should offer these Tomes separately too for people who don't want to overload their tomes list. I'd love a standalone Tome of Vice for example.

Just noticed a big oversight because I don't think it is intended. The Succubus can use their "Seduce" ability on heroes/leaders which is really overpowered and no other mind control is able to do this for a reason.

Hey @ReverseRaven sorry for the delayed response and thanks for the bug report. I've been away playing other games for a while.

To be honest it's not surprising that there's an issue with Infiltrate Defenders, the mechanism behind that siege project is pretty janky and I never tested it in a defensive siege. The whole thing probably needs a rework.

I'll try to find a way to fix it when I get back into modding for the next update but I can't make any promises. I'll also add it to the known issues.

To add to my previous comment, I can confirm that the Infiltrate Defenders DOES work when a siege proceeds normally with you attacking into the besieged enemy. It's just when they come out to fight you that it doesn't.

Heya ScienceFictionGuy. Been playing this mod for a long time because it really did bring back the flavor of the Rogue from AoW3 and I really love the options this mod provides for tactical combat.

That being said, and apologies because this is kind of a double post from bug reports (I wasn't sure if you'd seen it), I can't seem to get Infiltrate Defenders to work. I saw the known issue but the siege project just doesn't seem to work. The icon never shows up and neither do the units it's supposed to summon. The thing is, I've only been able to test it in battles where the AI decides to attack me while I'm laying siege and I don't know if that factors into it at all.

Mostly since the AI always tries to hit me because numerically it has better forces than I do.
