FOTS Intimidating Samurai

Description
In the Fots experience, modern units are wholly superior to traditional units. Well positioned rifle-armed units will destroy melee units in pitched battles.
In terms of the effectiveness of guns, this is obviously the correct balance, however I always felt that the balance to this system was off, both from a game perspective but also a historical perspective.

You, as a modern person sitting comfortably at a computer, know that your rifle-armed peasants make for a fearsome army that would wipe the floor with sword and spear-wielding traditionalist samurai.
But your peasant soldiers shouldn't know that. Your conscript peasant farmers should be absolutely trembling in their boots at the sight of the fearsome professional samurai warriors who fight for enemy warlords.

In order to correct this imbalance, I have given all traditional, professional fots units the unit abilities 'banzai' and 'warcry', allowing terrifying charges into the ranks of gun-toting conscript troops (and adding greater importance of elite and western infantry who have superior morale).

From the Shogun 2 encyclopedia:

"Banzai!" is a battle cry used by no-dachi samurai that increases the speed and violence of their charge and melee attack, whilst active. Banzai also freezes the attacking unit's morale for the duration of the effect.

The war cry is used by all warrior monk units and heroes to strike fear into the hearts of their enemies. When activated, the war cry greatly lowers the morale, movement speed and defensive capabilities of nearby enemy units.

Seems to be save-game compatible.

Note that the Fots tech tree by default locks the Banzai ability to researching the T1 military technology Shih.

Honestly I wouldn't give all traditional units the banzai ability, especially when it will make the upgraded and/or experienced units even more overpowered considering their overwhelming melee superiority against modern units:winter2019happyyul:

Well technically they would be well trained and disciplined troops as well and not "conscript peasant farmers" but I get the spirit of the mod.

This is excellent and a simple change, thanks for the mod :)

Interesting.
In my own testing I preferred these vanilla Shogun 2 abilities because I felt that they were more consistent/transparent.
I guess I could consider activating a fear effect in addition to these abilities, though you seem to think they are too op already lol
My problem is that melee units don't really fit at all in the campaign games that I play.
In vanilla fots it seems like once you get base Line Infantry everything traditional is obsolete. Perhaps it has to do with my personal playstyle, but I'm reasonably happy with the balance I've got with the mod, in particular the General Hatsumoto seems to be a very powerful unit now.

I think melee units are fine the way they are in FOTS and can get huge advantages against ranged units by using the terrain to avoid early casualties. Mainly the problem is in mid to late game as ranged units not only get more deadly in range, but also in melee. So those abilities can help the samurai out quite well but a bit too much in my opinion.

If you are interested in also making an alternative, I found that there's a stat that gives fear effect to units in units_stats_land called "fear effect". By defualt it's set to 0 but when i gave samurai a value of 10, black bear infantry's morale was: steady, concerned: frightened by enemy unit.

Idk what would be the ideal value for the morale debuff, and does not appear to stack, but if you play around with it you could potentially make a second version that reflects the idea better and stays a bit more consistant.
