This mechanic works for vanilla cars, and mods that use vanilla templates like Motorious Zone ) - I do not use custom car mods, so I can not vouch for those. If they do not, you'll need to talk to their authors.
As for B41's "I got in the car too quickly, and got bit coz apparently the door remains open" issue - I believe this was removed/fixed in B42, as this no longer appears to happen.

although i got a big mod list so hard to tell if I've induced this myself although other than just adding popular well known vehicle mods i have nothing that changes the way doors or cars are handled.
