Description
Cobaltite is already in the game, but you can't really do much with it except make stone items. This simple mod allows you to make cobalt bars from cobaltite, for use in furniture, tools and crafts, similar to titanium and gold. The main purpose of this mod is to make cobaltite useful, and to give players a way to make valuable bright blue items out of metal to decorate their fortress. The stone (ore) works for construction and furniture as well.

The density is lighter than silver so it's easier to work with, and the material value is the same as silver (10). Should be compatible with any mods that don't add their own cobalt. Remember: "Cobaltite" functions as a stone and an ore, similar to Hematite. "Cobalt" is the metal made from smelting cobaltite.

I know what you're thinking... "Why not allow us to make weapons and armor with cobalt too"? Originally, I wanted to do that as an alternative to iron for fortresses who don't have access to a sedimentary layer. However, the graphical update makes adding weapons and armor very difficult to figure out because of the layer system, used to dynamically update the appearance of dwarves carrying around their equipment. I would like to add cobalt equipment once I can figure out how to make it appear when it's equipped.

Blue is the color that Dwarf Fortress absolutely needed.

I don't think I can do that, unfortunately. It's probably hardcoded, and I can't find a file that simply lists materials eligible for automining. I hoped it would automatically detect that the cobaltite functions as an ore type, but apparently not

can you make it so that dwarves can automine the cobaltite? right now they treat it just like any other stone

Yeah, the blue was really neat in the old version of DF. That's one reason why I wanted to make this mod, so you can turn the black cobaltite into blue cobalt to make cool blue furniture and stuff again

Cobaltite wasn't all the useless tho, I liked using it (many people also do this) at least in the non steam versions for it's unique color (Steam got rid of this) but uh it's dense...not good for furniture due to that or any crafting really, it's catapult ammo xD Though it is also fire safe so you had that going for it too. Makes me really wish it still had its unique color rutile with its purple too :<

I found an interesting issue, though a rather minor one. If you set up a work order to create something with the cobalt, the "suggested conditions" give "amount of COBALTITE bars available is greater than 10." No matter how many bars you make you will never reach that goal because you are not making cobaltite bars, but rather COBALT bars. It's easy to adjust your work orders once you know the issue. How frustrated you get by this will just depend on how long it takes you to work it out. (I won't tell you how long it took me.)

Love the mod, by the way!!!

Well, I know several mods are adding new weapons and materials. For example, the Aeramore Expansion adds several new materials (Dragon Steel, Mithril, Gems, Etc) and colored graphics. Maybe check that one out for inspiration?

There is also an Arcane Metals mod that does it.

Yeah originally I wanted to recolor the steel weapons a little more blue and use that as craftable cobalt weapons but I couldn't reverse engineer it and I'm not sure anyone else has done it yet either

Ah, I thought you could just link it to the steel or iron graphics. Shows my lack of knowledge ;P
