Blue is the color that Dwarf Fortress absolutely needed.

I don't think I can do that, unfortunately. It's probably hardcoded, and I can't find a file that simply lists materials eligible for automining. I hoped it would automatically detect that the cobaltite functions as an ore type, but apparently not
TheEpicTroll Aug 29, 2023 @ 11:51am
can you make it so that dwarves can automine the cobaltite? right now they treat it just like any other stone
Haethei  [author] Mar 25, 2023 @ 7:58pm
Yeah, the blue was really neat in the old version of DF. That's one reason why I wanted to make this mod, so you can turn the black cobaltite into blue cobalt to make cool blue furniture and stuff again

Cobaltite wasn't all the useless tho, I liked using it (many people also do this) at least in the non steam versions for it's unique color (Steam got rid of this) but uh it's dense...not good for furniture due to that or any crafting really, it's catapult ammo xD Though it is also fire safe so you had that going for it too. Makes me really wish it still had its unique color rutile with its purple too :<

I found an interesting issue, though a rather minor one. If you set up a work order to create something with the cobalt, the "suggested conditions" give "amount of COBALTITE bars available is greater than 10." No matter how many bars you make you will never reach that goal because you are not making cobaltite bars, but rather COBALT bars. It's easy to adjust your work orders once you know the issue. How frustrated you get by this will just depend on how long it takes you to work it out. (I won't tell you how long it took me.)

Love the mod, by the way!!!

Well, I know several mods are adding new weapons and materials. For example, the Aeramore Expansion adds several new materials (Dragon Steel, Mithril, Gems, Etc) and colored graphics. Maybe check that one out for inspiration?

There is also an Arcane Metals mod that does it.

Yeah originally I wanted to recolor the steel weapons a little more blue and use that as craftable cobalt weapons but I couldn't reverse engineer it and I'm not sure anyone else has done it yet either
Thrice Feb 9, 2023 @ 12:58pm
Ah, I thought you could just link it to the steel or iron graphics. Shows my lack of knowledge ;P
Haethei  [author] Feb 9, 2023 @ 12:37pm
Creature graphics are annoying and difficult. Not sure the game is even set up to allow modding creature graphics properly right now. If someone finds a good way to do it then I'll consider making some mods with creature graphics involved like cobalt weapons
Thrice Feb 9, 2023 @ 12:17pm
The weapon graphics I meant sorry lol. Hard not to assume everyone reads my mind haha
Thrice Feb 9, 2023 @ 12:17pm
Can you make it appear using the iron or steel graphics?

how do i add meds ? do i just grab the resorce name ? and patch it into the metel beds mod ?
patbaum Jan 21, 2023 @ 4:09pm
Cobalt is actually German for "Goblin Gold" because if you try to smelt it poisonous gas (arsenic I think) is released.

I always thought the it would be cool if Goblins in the game carried some cobalt weapons and if dwarfs tried to smelt raw cobaltite then poisonous gas would be released...

Would love to see this realised too! I've always wanted to use Cobaltite in DF, but in the classic I never dealt with mods or any raws editing but now I would love to be able to make some fancy blue weapons and armor eventually.
Haethei  [author] Dec 18, 2022 @ 6:17am
Yeah, that mod is where I originally found the solution I didn't like very much lol

I'm certain it's possible without doing that, I'm just gonna wait until I find the answer a little more easily. Probably won't take that long for someone to show up with a revolutionary mod
Kasa Dec 18, 2022 @ 6:14am
I think Nautilus might be your ticket.

Except I think they are doing the very thing you didn't want to do.
Haethei  [author] Dec 18, 2022 @ 5:58am
I think it's possible to use a token that completely cuts the existing dwarven graphics file out, which allows me to simply copy it word for word (which is hundreds of lines of text) and then simply add my own little things inside it, but that is a very destructive solution that makes mods incompatible with other mods and I refuse to do that with any of mine, much better to simply add or modify existing tokens inside of existing objects
Haethei  [author] Dec 18, 2022 @ 5:56am
Yeah, the vanilla files are an absolute mess for this. It's a new system introduced with the graphical update of DF and they made a disaster out of that text file. Generally you can learn what the tokens and numbers do when there's a guide to follow (like the DF modding wiki) but this is too new to understand and has to be reverse engineered hard
Kasa Dec 18, 2022 @ 5:55am
Dang, worth a shot.

Perhaps checking the vanilla file folders to see what the dev does but other then that without REALLY digging in nothing comes off the top of my head =/

I think there are a few other modders who have weapons visually show up but I'm not sure which ones exactly.
Haethei  [author] Dec 18, 2022 @ 5:51am
Nah, I had a look at their mod files and they have the same exact issue as me. The items have images for whenever they're not equipped, but I need graphics that appear on the dwarf when they are holding the item. You know how your miners run around holding little pickaxes? I can't get it to work with modded weapons, they appear as if they're holding nothing
Haethei  [author] Dec 18, 2022 @ 5:44am
That's actually very helpful, thanks
Kasa Dec 18, 2022 @ 5:42am
Send Aura a msg, they added a few new wooden training weapons using the living wood texture I'm sure they can help you out.

Haethei  [author] Dec 18, 2022 @ 5:35am
I think it's definitely possible, just a real pain to figure out. When someone else figures it out and makes a mod that I can reverse engineer by reading the raws, it will probably be much easier. So far some other mods look like they understand the graphics system but I wasn't able to reverse engineer them, need something very similar to the thing I'm trying to do
Kasa Dec 18, 2022 @ 5:33am
Good mod, hope you figure out the weapons and armor thing.
