I don't think this is beatable without cheating/level hopping using the main menu. From Marble and up there are no new shoe powerups. You simply lack the speed and maneuverability to make it over the lava/sinking+burning grass platforms. You can neither make the gap, or realistically hold on to enough rings to tank your way across. That isn't to say you can't brute force the game with the use of the level select, but you certainly won't be collecting all the emeralds as Motobug.
Nor am I positive it can outrun the Robotnik that falls on you with a spike or the endgame pistons. But it's fun, and gimmicky.
