Is it possible to make the effects of the books to be a gene?
Miss Classy Pineapple Apr 14 @ 3:45pm
@Faenix @Wolfette I think I might have found a sorta workaround for this issue. Faenix's comment clued me in on it. If you want your pawn to read something, set their entire schedule to sleep, forbid the book in question, and then order that pawn to read the book.
Wonky and weird way to do it? Yes absolutely. But it works

CHICKEN BOOKEY!
Wolfette Apr 9 @ 10:19pm
@Faenix Glad I am not the only one having the issue tbh, comparing our mod lists I see a fair bit in common, if it is a mod issue it's likely one of those. Strangely enough when I start a new colony with the same mod list the issue doesn't appear, so maybe it's something related to the colony being around for a while.
Faenix Apr 9 @ 8:47pm
Well at least I can rule this one out. I'm thinking it might be something to do with my task scheduling since it seems like there are no issues at night when everyone's set to sleep, but whenever there's a need someone needs to meet they're dropping the book to meet that need instead. Thanks Sarg!

No relevant errors there. Unfortunately you'll have to discover which other mod is doing it
Faenix Apr 8 @ 8:14pm
I was here awhile ago cause books weren't being destroyed after being read btw, forgot to say.
Faenix Apr 8 @ 8:07pm
Whelp I have returned, things are being weird again. But this time, I do have a log! Thanks for the mod suggestion to get a proper one, worked like a charm. Tried to make the error happen but it actually worked for commanding the one pawn to read a book, but I saw another colonist read a ruined book at the same time and it didn't get destroyed so that error should still be in the log. https://gist.github.com/HugsLibRecordKeeper/872463c5b40721fcad889797b5866c9c

There appears to be a bit of cheese that can be done with this - the Ruined radio beacon object which is what triggers the counter raid while on library maps only goes off when you enter its visible radius in the building, however, since the bookshelves can be looted by reforming caravan as soon as they are visible this can easily be cheesed.

To counter this you could have bookshelves need to be "opened" like hermetic crates and then drop the contents on the floor?

A thought but not a major issue.

Thats a nice mod :)
Reading policies compatibility to clean some mess (I'm hoarding all books)
Making the aplpha book types (special/burned/ruined) selctable in the reading policy I could allow my pawns to read all awful crap and increase the overall crapbook quality to have only master/legendary ruined books making my science bonus and have all low quality being auto read as a int-stat-potion.
*I havent checked if it makes any difference to reading bonus to research if the book is hi/lo quality but its always nice to have only the best stuff, now I manually let them read crap stories to get rid of some ruined/burned books
Kerian Halcyon Apr 5 @ 3:00pm
@Vulkandrache Thanks, confirmed that the pawn has the durathread perk attached after reading your comment.
Vulkandrache Apr 4 @ 2:57am
The pawn will have the books effect added to it.
Usualy in the form of a buff under "health"
Kerian Halcyon Apr 4 @ 2:39am
Quick observation with the mod, there's no indicator as to whether or not a book gets completed and read or not. I forced a pawn to read a book (Durathread construction book), set it up to have her read it, I looked away and then looked back after a set amount of time and she was back to doing another job. I couldn't tell if she completed the book and couldn't remember if I had multiple versions of the book in my bookshelves (I like having the research bonus readily available).

There's no bar or label that shows if a book is being read to completion or not. Besides the book being destroyed after use is there any indicator in the mod to let players know if a book's been read all the way?
Sarg Bjornson  [author] Apr 1 @ 5:03am
They use a patch on the vanilla reading jobdriver, so anything affecting that might be breaking things. Unfortunately a binary search of a modlist is likely to be the only way to pinpoint the faulty mod, unless errors are popping up in the log
Vulkandrache Apr 1 @ 4:59am
A new map with only the basic mods and children as young as 4 are getting the buff from reading the book.

The behavior with my modlist is inconsistent.
At first i thought it was the children but it worked for some.
Then i thought it might be Puppeteer.
It might also be that the toilet need from Dubs Hygene is making pawns cancel the reading.
Or it could be a mod you guys are unlikely to give support for.

I can get every pawn to get the buff but for some it takes multiple tries.
If i find out more i will let you know.

Is there something different about the books from Alpha compared to Expanded or Anomaly?
Are there some limitations on them?
LIke a pawn being incapable of crafting or construction not being able to get the buff.
Or pawns with wounds or diseases needing treament running of in the middle of reading.
Sarg Bjornson  [author] Apr 1 @ 3:50am
Does that happen with only this mod active?
Vulkandrache Apr 1 @ 3:35am
Am i having a modconflict if children arent able to read the "treatsy of stainless steel"
or is that intended?
They go to a chair to start reading and then immediately stop and put the book back.
Sarg Bjornson  [author] Mar 31 @ 11:13pm
Congratulations, you just made your next raid lethal!
DIRGE Mar 31 @ 3:27pm
Midas tome might need some balancing, such as making it a single item, or two items or something. Alpha books is one of the only non QOL mods I have, and I just went from 600k wealth to 900k in 12 hours, generating 15500 gold by making thrones out of steel and then deconstructing for gold.

Gentlemanne Digby Mar 31 @ 4:25am
fair enough! Thanks anyway :)
Sarg Bjornson  [author] Mar 31 @ 4:19am
Unfortunately none of those two mod were coded by me, and I'm not brave enough to look at Lego's code for long :)
Gentlemanne Digby Mar 31 @ 4:11am
So I've noted two incompatibilities with Vanilla expanded content, just raising it.

First is With VFE Ancients -> Mending table. The table calls for the material the item is made from in order to repair it, but durathread and stainless steel cannot generally be gathered in normal play since items made from Cloth and Steel respectively automatically just become durathread and stainless steel upon completion.

If possible, allowing the mending table to use standard steel and cloth for mending these items would fix It, I believe.

Second issue is with the Psycast books. These unlock vanilla psycasting abilities when Psycasting expanded is installed (I.e pawn abilities) as opposed to the Psycasting expanded abilities like say, a psytrainer would typically do.
Justalittleg00ber999 Mar 30 @ 3:56pm
The famous youtuber Hazzor probably gets wet over thinking about this mod.
yell0w Mar 30 @ 12:07pm
im assuming you cannot write religious books with the writers desk from VE books?
Reidlos Mar 28 @ 8:21am
Ok found my own answer. Apparently this isnt faction wide but the person that finished the book. I had my main crafter read it but he stopped short for w/e reason. So i had someone else read it to check.....well that person isnt a crafter so lol . Anyway good to know for anyone with this issue i guess.
Reidlos Mar 28 @ 8:18am
any known issues with durathread? i read the book and i see the material as a option in crafting but since its not a actual material i do what it says and make a cloth what ever, and its till cloth at end. just wondering if anyone knows a pre existing conflict or if there is a way to do it im missing.

any performance mods maybe intercepting?
Sarg Bjornson  [author] Mar 23 @ 10:44am
Logs always after the error happens. Otherwise what's the point? :)
Wolfette Mar 23 @ 10:34am
I repeat; will any log do Sarg or only one taken when a pawn reads a book and it doesn't vanish?
Sarg Bjornson  [author] Mar 23 @ 12:02am
Use the Hugslib standalone
Faenix Mar 22 @ 8:57pm
update: IT WORKS! I just let it run for awhile and downloaded rocketman after removing it and all is right with the world. My guy is ready to make lots of durathread button down shirts.
Faenix Mar 22 @ 8:14pm
So I booted up my old run with the exact same mod list I'm currently running, and everything works perfectly. It's apparently just my current run that's being weird? Now I'm just confused. I'm probably just going to deal with it for now, I'll probably get wiped out by mechs sooner or later anyways!
Faenix Mar 22 @ 8:01pm
I have DBH as well. Tried getting a log but it's giving me an error telling me I'm "unauthorised" to do so when I do, so not sure how to get around that. I've had both alpha books as well as DBH since alpha books came out and it's worked just fine up until just a few days ago when I started a new run. I'm going to reload my old run with that mod list and report back.
Wolfette Mar 22 @ 2:06pm
@Faenix Atleast I'm not the only one, will any log do Sarg or only one taken when a pawn reads a book and it doesn't vanish? I have a suspicion that a need of some kind is interrupting the pawn and taking priority before they finish reading at all. DBH is my current suspect if that's the case.
Sarg Bjornson  [author] Mar 21 @ 11:56pm
Without a log, no one can help
Faenix Mar 21 @ 10:13pm
@wolfette I'm having the same issue. Ruined books aren't falling apart after being red, and the books that are supposed to be single use aren't doing anything / being used up when read. Saw one of my colonists reading one of the single use books without me telling them to too. Think there's anything you did to fix it? I tried reloading but that doesn't seem to be helping.
Sarg Bjornson  [author] Mar 21 @ 12:10am
That's vanilla :D
Wolfette Mar 20 @ 3:58pm
Well whatever the problem was it somehow fixed itself, maybe I was seeing things, I dunno. I did wanna say there does seem to be an issue with the layering of two book shelves when you put them back to back with the top one rendering over the bottom one and it looks quite off.
Sarg Bjornson  [author] Mar 19 @ 11:56pm
You have a mod conflict. They auto delete once read
Wolfette Mar 19 @ 4:54pm
Love this mod, but I am curious, the description of the ruined books will 'basically disintegrate after being read', but this doesn't seem to be the case at all? I assumed the ruined books we're there to be a once and done recreation item while more permanent books that only give recreation were the re-readable ones.
Get Donked On Mar 15 @ 2:59pm
any plans for the psycaster guides to get VPE compat?
TheOrigami Mar 6 @ 5:19pm
I like this
Lord Rugdumph Mar 6 @ 2:32pm
Ahhhh my bad! Cheers
Sarg Bjornson  [author] Mar 6 @ 11:40am
No... he builds, or crafts, things. That's it
Lord Rugdumph Mar 6 @ 11:38am
I got my pawn to read a midas tome and he has the ability on his health tab; how do i use it? I assumed it'd be like a psycast type button but can't see any extra abilities
Sarg Bjornson  [author] Mar 4 @ 11:33pm
No, it's literally a 128 px icon, you might have a corrupted file
MercuryPoisoning Mar 4 @ 11:21pm
The PNG named "ABooks_RuinedLibrary.png" appears to be causing incredible slowdown for installation of this mod, is this a massively oversized image or something?
Sarg Bjornson  [author] Mar 3 @ 10:37pm
No plans to ever do that, it is working exactly like I want it to work
Neidhardt Mar 3 @ 7:14pm
I would also like to second the suggestion for changing the durathread and stainless steel abilities into something more akin to Anomaly's alchemist creepjoiner's ability.
Gyger Feb 25 @ 4:17am
If anyone else is also using What's for sale with this mod, check this mod's rulepacks to search for the types of books you want to buy.
Austin5125 Feb 23 @ 9:18am
Just a suggestion regarding the durathread and stainless steel book. Wouldn't it be better to add the ability to convert materials rather than current mechanism? It's kinda inconsistent when multiple pawns are assigned to build stuff, and sometimes I don't want to build stuff with new materials because of its high market value.
