Regarding compatibility issues. It seems to make more sense to create a new file for 3X ion cannon instead of overwrite starbase.txt file. This will allow compatibility with mods like expended starbase.

In fact, instead of overwrite all the vanilla file, it would probably be more compatible to create a new section template file for all the new sections.

Theoretically, yes. They should be able to research the tech and use the sections, and each of them has the tags and weights for the AI to pick them over other ones if they prefer specific weapon types e.g. picking the Carrier titan sections if they like strike craft.

Fair enough. I've made a variant without the research requirements here . I've also added a link to the description. I might change this one to not have the research requirement if the tech-less one is more popular. :)

I'm with you up until you require research to get the new sections. If they are balanced, they should be available without extra research. And your overall approach to balancing makes sense. Please consider a variant of this mod that just adds the sections immediately on researching the ship type.

It can be done, I know - take a look at the existing, fully functional mod https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2322836135 , which is not as thorough as this but has very similar ideas.
