However, why not swap Range with Mobility? Melee units have no use for +1 Range, and mounted units get Mobility instead. I went ahead and swapped them by tweaking the LUA file for myself, but I think it makes sense if you're taking suggestions.
Of course you've probably moved on to Civ 6, but thanks for the mod!
Actually a melee unit with a ranged promotion gains ZERO benefit. The game fools you by listing Ranged Attack +45% in green, but since that unit is not using a Ranged Attack, it effectively has zero effect for either attacking or defending, regardless of the terrain.
The best way to see this in action is to use the In-Game-Editor to give yourself a hand-axe, keshik, or something similar and give yourself the ranged promos on the unit, then upgrade it to a knight or whatever. Spawn a Barbarian unit with significantly higher strength like an Infantry. Note the projected damage shown. Then, spawn an identical melee unit to the one with the ranged promotions. The damage will be the same.
The only reason Ranged units gain any benefit from Melee upgrades is because Combat Strength is used when they are attacked, and Melee upgrades boost Combat Strength. Of course when they use their ranged attack they gain no benefit from either Blitz or Shock.
The Chariot Archer gets ranged promotions, but this mod switches them to melee promotions when the CA is upgraded to the melee Knight
Yes, in a way it does, since ranged promotion of a chariot archer still affect the combat strenght if you upgrade them into knights, but those promotion can't get you the higher promotions that can give you blitz or march (eg. if a knight has accuracy 2, then it can't get shock 3, which is requierred for blitz and march).
