there is an engine room toward the front of thee middle deck. you can start each engine individually from there, or all at once with the center key button.
you can also start the ships main generator engine from there, which is what the smokestacks up top are connected to.

i cant seem to find a way to turn on the engines, is there a key button or is it fully automatic?

As of the Space DLC update, i have yet to add a life support system, so refrain from high altitudes. il work on one once i get the chance.
