Can we please get an update for this if you find the time for it? It's such a nice quality of life mod.

An update would be nice. To a layman like me, the mod looks simple and should work, but it's always better to be sure. So, please consider updating.

Thanks for the mod. Would love to see it store components, cloth, ect.

I don't really see it that way. I mean, what are we doing? We ... make the tools with our bare hands? Plus, cabinets are more relevant to *cozy* colonies who don't want to sacrifice a bunch of space for multiple tables. After all, two workbenches are faster than one with two cabinets. This is cheaper either way, but I figure it's worth asking who we're trying to "balance" around: someone with enough materials to build cabinets for every workbench and won't care, or people who like tightly packed multi-function spaces? In either case, expense isn't some grand balancing feature. The real value of pulling steel out is further stretching out early game local sources.

But I'll offer up an alternative: the tools are part of the workbench. The tool cabinet only represents the efficiency that comes from having central, organized storage. This is why they can be shared among different tables.

Just to emphasize that I'm taking this feedback seriously, here's the github issue I've opened on the subject. I'm going to experiment with some different recipes and see what "feels right." The point about having to make the tools to go in the cabinet really resonates with me, so I think a recipe change is definitely coming soon.

Thanks to all who've commented. Feel free to comment on the github issue if the urge strikes you.

Wow who could've thought we don't have waste precious early steel on cabinets

Request to make the tool cabinet marriable.

I have a question: is it possible to also make it a storage?
Velvet Aug 7, 2023 @ 6:51pm
I can't imagine the actual cabinet requires more than the 50 material used for the dresser given they're the same size. The reason the tool cabinet costs so much more material despite that is because the majority of that material actually goes into the tools inside it, not the cabinet itself (And also for balance).

If you do go through with changing the cost distribution from the current (150 +50 ) maybe just make it a 50/50 split, so 100 steel and 100 woody/metalic
Decently balanced, and the idea that 100 steel is used for the tools and moving parts of the furniture while the 'other' mats are used for the body of the drawers.
Either way great mod, makes deco better

If you think about it, most of that steel is likely going into the tools and drawers and whatnot rather than the outer "shell" of the cabinet. Kind of like how the stonecutter's table has an extra 30 steel for that bigass hammer

@Luigipunch @LKFAdam I hear what y'all say about the recipe, and I'm going to seriously consider it. On the one hand is game balance, and on the other hand is my own sense of what's immersive. If I were building a piece of furniture out of wood, I'd need more wood than steel, but maybe that's taking "common sense" too far. I'll think about it. Thanks for the feedback, both of you!

Great little mod! (Also I second Luigipunch's idea)

Great idea! Can't believe nobody's thought of this before.

I'd honestly flip the construction cost around to 150 steel + 50 other stuff, the big steel cost is what keeps the cabinet costly yet worth it for bigger colonies

seems balanced! nice!
