Sorry to bother you but I found a mod that seems to have added coifs, maybe you could use something from it as an template for a material or adding them to this mod?

As much as I would like to add a coif I would have to create a custom material (Quilt) in order to make the armor act as it should while fitting under mail. I already spent way too long on this mod trying to figure it out and messing with material science doesnt jive with me. If you could give me a nice quilt material ill be more inclined, check the discussion

Yo! There's also an extra piece of Arming wear that isn't in this mod yet, but could be added. An arming coif, which would normally be worn underneath a helmet as a padded under layer. Very much vital for softening blows to the head

im making a custom material now, i'll update the mod soon

Im going to make a discussion thread if you want to continue this

okay well silk gambesons and arming pants give steel chain a hard fight, even with adamantine spears they hardly penetrate
I love plants  [author] Feb 17, 2023 @ 8:48pm
also damage to clothing only happens if the attack penetrates
I love plants  [author] Feb 17, 2023 @ 8:46pm
holy smokes silk is really strong silk won 8/10 fights vs fur
I love plants  [author] Feb 17, 2023 @ 8:34pm
specifically fur, im going to test silk right now

so adamantine helm boots gauntlets leather armor + leather tunic leather leggings + leather trousers vs same thing but cloth gambeson + cloth tunic arming pants + cloth trouser, cloth has 60% win rate
I love plants  [author] Feb 17, 2023 @ 8:24pm
im testing the cloth versus its leather counterparts right now arming pants+ trousers vs leather leggings+ trousers ect

Its okay, I agree it feels bad when i see that an iron spear tears guts through a gambeson most of the time, although an armor system without the gambeson and arming pants never wins the fights versus the cloth system

I thought the chain tag made materials less defensive. I just dgi then. As long as it provides an extra bit of protection, I'm pretty happy with what you've got. I was over-complicating things
I love plants  [author] Feb 17, 2023 @ 8:13pm
oh I see, I doubt it would rip faster, as the pen rolls only have one result, from more testing it is a lot more protective than 4 tunics due to that chain structure tag Im testing stuff right now
qscrew Feb 17, 2023 @ 7:54pm
Okay, that's good to know. Copper mail is decent in DF, though.

I think you need [PERMITTED_REACTION:MAKE_GAMBESON] in your entity file. The game is just using the normal reaction for making clothes to make your gambesons, not your custom one. That leaves two reactions to make the same thing but like I said idk how to remove the built-in reactions

Double coverage is interesting, maybe that will rip it up faster too?
I love plants  [author] Feb 17, 2023 @ 7:53pm
if you have an idea about a better testing system let me know
I love plants  [author] Feb 17, 2023 @ 7:46pm
Changing the coverage to over 100 give a chance of double rolls for penetration, so a coverage of 150 would mean that every penetration roll has a 50% chance of rolling twice, 200 coverage a garantee of a second roll

IRL copper chainmail is ass though
I love plants  [author] Feb 17, 2023 @ 7:42pm
I have a few ideas how to make it more protective but 1 cloth for compareable copper chain is already great
I love plants  [author] Feb 17, 2023 @ 7:37pm
I tried setting the reagent to 40000 and it didnt work. From my arena testing its really effective due to the [STRUCTURAL_ELASTICITY_CHAIN_METAL] tag allowing it to act like armor when taking damage. In my testing it is compareable to copper chain mail 10 vs 10 all copper but one team has gambesons instead of chainshirt chainshirt wins with 1-2 survivors every time, combat log shows a significant reduction in impact but it gets torn to shreds quickly
qscrew Feb 17, 2023 @ 6:53pm
Point being, that gambeson could get a custom material to make it a bit more protective, if it's currently not much different from normal clothes
qscrew Feb 17, 2023 @ 6:48pm
I'm figuring this stuff out, too. I don't think you can get the built-in reactions to cost more than 1 cloth per item of clothing. And I don't know how to get rid of the built-in reactions, either, without getting rid of the building that uses them. The reagent cost needs to use the reagent quantity specific to the item type -- which is 10k per piece of cloth, 15k per spool of thread, 150 for bars and liquids, and 1 otherwise.

I don't think your gambeson is more protective than normal clothing, also, but idk. I was thinking of this:

[REACTION:MAKE_COIF_PADDED_CLOTH]
[NAME:make padded coif (cloth)]
[BUILDING:CLOTHES:NONE]
[REAGENT:A:20000:CLOTH:NONE:NONE:NONE][ANY_PLANT_MATERIAL][HAS_REACTION_CLASS:PADDING_WOVEN]
[REAGENT:B:30000:THREAD:NONE:NONE:NONE]
[PRODUCT:100:1:ARMOR:ITEM_HELM_COIF_PADDED:GET_MATERIAL_FROM_REAGENT:A:CRAFTED_PADDING_PLANT]

To make that work, plants and creatures that produce thread need a material made of that thread and their thread needs REACTION_CLASS
