The route itself does make my system work noticeably harder than others but doesn't ask too much of it. It's no worse than say Waterloo in Portmouth Direct or Newton Abbott in Riviera in the '50s when they're busy.
Like I said though- points for ambition.
According to the Stainmore Railway's website, there is no evidence diesel locomotives ran over Stainmore itself. They were, however, seen on freight services on the Eden Valley line until that was cut back to Appleby-in-Westmoreland.
You're not the only one who's had difficulty running Stainmore-the route is incredibly demanding on PC hardware. I have upgraded to a better PC since I last tried the route though, so hopefully an SSD and a better graphics card will do the trick.
I'm interested that you're hoping to do a steam version and will look out for it. As far as I can tell trains over Stainmoor were worked entirely by steam apart from some passenger services that used DMUs- I certainly can't find any photo's of Diesel hauled trains. There is a (steam) banking scenario for the Stainmoor, Shap and Eden Valley route that I can't get to work at all but that may well by my fault.
