Here you can find mod that allows you to import ANY HotSpringTexture into game, and change it without restarting. WORKS with 1.5 version of game.

So as far as I can tell it still works fine, you just get a little popup in your mods list saying it's out of date

Well, water is a good absorber of radiation, and the spent fuel rods would produce a fair amount of fuel, so as long as you stayed away from the center it should be safe... Ish.
