Even though I added the line "is_ruler = yes", I still cannot see the "study" interaction on my character.
Lord Jun 29 @ 10:08am
@Slothcat Also there's a mod inspired by this one that I made called "Short Wagon Losers to go School", I can't even remember why I made that version now, but maybe that is more flexible to allow you to pre-train those nepotism losers.
Lord Jun 29 @ 10:02am
@Slothcat I have no opinion on the existence of a mod like that (play however it is you want), but there's a good argument against it:

The problem with nepotism is that these bastards don't get better over time (and don't need to)... why would they? That's kind of the whole point of having the system, the challenge of balancing between political favors and talent. But like I said already, if an easier mode mod (this mod is already an easy mode) which works like that fits your playstyle, go for it.
h.barisuz Jun 29 @ 5:50am
I tried everything but I cant see interactions!
Slothcat Jun 14 @ 9:32am
Cool mod, but what do you think about a mod where someone passively gets better at their job over time? I'm pretty sure all my fellow emperors here despise having to submit to nepotism because of those greedy families, needing to replace that skill level X commoner with a skill level V family member.
AntraxNL May 28 @ 5:15am
@Twiddle factor to my knowledge it STILL works people are bit autistic with the symbol but that's just simple update away.

also again i love ur mod
Twiddle Factor  [author] May 28 @ 5:12am
is it not working in the current game version?
xbect May 27 @ 9:11am
please mate you got to update this... i cant go back from this mod ^^
lilMobStick Dec 5, 2022 @ 1:02pm
shout out to all the modders who make it worth still playing this game
Lord Aug 4, 2022 @ 2:48pm
Like what happens with a lot of mod authors, when you're on a break from a game your interest in modding goes down. I'm not done with IR forever so I wouldn't call this abandoned. Silver lining with no updates is that this mod will probably just keep working forever anyway.

Let me know what kind of ideas you have or post other feedback here. If it's interesting (and I feel like I can accomplish it) maybe I'll drop in or merge a contribution. Certain types of changes in Paradox modding can be pretty frustrating (or flat out impossible) so I usually keep my ambitions below Caesar level... maybe more Claudius level. I don't mind contributions to merge in but first we'd have to figure out if we both even like the proposed additions, and how we'd facilitate sharing changes.

It is a bit of a powerful mod (esp. as Rome which is already strong) but since I tend to handicap myself with house rules sometimes anyway I guess that's fair, right? :P
Augustus II Aug 3, 2022 @ 5:56pm
dude this is a great mod, well the idea is I am about to use it now. I think character interactions are the biggest thing missing from this game. Do you plan on continuing to work on it? Id be willing to help. I wanted to do something similar but have only modded Total War. But this is almost exactly what I was thinking.
Lord Apr 30, 2022 @ 1:32am
Oh yeah I did end up releasing a mod like this, in a maximally obnoxious style inspired by this mod: "Short Wagon Losers go to School". lol
Twiddle Factor  [author] Apr 28, 2022 @ 5:36am
Thanks for the compliment. I find the disciple event really helps to keep the character stats somewhat decent into the late game. I haven't updated the mod in a while, but I am thinking of adding some stat gain events for characters in a job to improve their stats as well. For generals in particular, I think it would be fun if even low martial characters could get better if they win enough battles. Of course, I will make sure to keep things balanced and not overpowered.
Anselm Apr 27, 2022 @ 8:36am
Just a thank-you-I-appreciate-your-work note. This was exactly the mod I needed for a duff heir to Epirus. Not overpowered, not negligible, very well balanced.
Lord Aug 9, 2021 @ 7:14pm
I'll probably put it out there. Not sure how popular it'd be and probably a bit over-powered.

Compulsory advanced education. Pay 100(?) gold to force a character aged 16-22 (23? 24? 25?) to start a year long scheme which raises a stat from 0 to 3 points. This is done by the player clicking one of 4 buttons on the character's interaction page. Four types of "tutoring", one per stat. Disallow more training after a stat hits 13 or higher. Ineligible if they already have a job.

It's basically done, but it probably needs tweaks (political cost?) or I might decide to enhance more. Ideas..

-Certain traits prevent certain types of (or any) tutoring
-Require a specific tutor to be selected, which limits how high the maximum increase is, kind of like how this mod does disciples. Not sure how hard this'd be to do since there's a character selection involved.
-Maybe scale the gold cost with income so it's not too cheap late-game
-Require head of family to pay? Not sure how hard that'd be.
Twiddle Factor  [author] Aug 8, 2021 @ 10:03pm
Thanks. Ya, I agree. I think it works better as a boost to the outcome.

I was planning to add a few more methods of increasing stats, such as generals having a chance to gain martial on victories, etc., but just haven't had time to mod very much.

I look forward to seeing what you are working on, if you decide to release it on the workshop.
Lord Aug 8, 2021 @ 7:06pm
Seems like it's nice as an optional bonus to improve outcomes.

I'll be honest though, I'm working on a similar mod (it works different and might be a bit over-powered, but also around improving stats), so I'll probably be using that one instead. Nice work here though.
Twiddle Factor  [author] Aug 8, 2021 @ 5:53am
Yes, that is outdated. The requirement for buildings in the capitals is currently disabled. I haven't decided if I want it in or not yet.
Lord Aug 7, 2021 @ 4:00pm
> and the capital has at least one building of the type corresponding to the area to be studied

Also, is this outdated? The change notes say "removed required buildings". Which buildings this mod looks at is a little unclear to me, unless I'm overlooking something.
Lord Aug 7, 2021 @ 3:48pm
>made the success chance change depending on the presence of various buildings in the capital

Which buildings?
Twiddle Factor  [author] Jul 16, 2021 @ 6:07am
I only edit one vanilla file in this mod, the schemes event file, but unfortunately Invictus also modifies the same file. My edit is not crucial though, so if you change the load order so that Invictus overwrites my changes, you should be fine.

The change I made was simply to make characters eligible for the study or disciple events cancel the content in life ambition if they are currently pursuing it. Without this, only major characters would actually use the schemes. I am not sure what Invictus changes in this file.
United States of Autism Jul 14, 2021 @ 2:01pm
Comp with Invictus?
Twiddle Factor  [author] Jul 2, 2021 @ 5:25am
I recently updated the mod to the newest version. There were no bugs before, but I changed a few things like allowing the disciples of governors to gain martial in addition to finesse. I plan on expanding the disciple events a little bit, tweaking the event successes and probabilities and adding a few new ambitions.
Уберите Из Мута Jun 17, 2021 @ 8:29pm
looks like it works okey
Twiddle Factor  [author] Jun 12, 2021 @ 3:56pm
I haven't played or modded for a while because of real life obligations, but I think it should work with the newer version. Has anyone tested it to see if it still works?
Уберите Из Мута May 31, 2021 @ 1:15pm
is it work okey at 2.0.3 ?
akuro Apr 23, 2021 @ 10:27am
pls update
Twiddle Factor  [author] Mar 25, 2021 @ 6:03am
Ya, you would just have to delete the line in the conditions that checks if they are jobless and then delete the check in the abandon section that makes them abandon the scheme if they gain a job.

The ruler is a little more complicated. I don't have time to give a detailed response now, but when I have some time to mod in the future, I will try to give you a response.
Tomice Mar 21, 2021 @ 1:21pm
Thank you, Twiddle factor!

Could you imagine creating a version where office holders (including the Ruler) are allowed to study? I tried to modify your mod for hours, but I failed to make it work with my very limited modding skills...
Twiddle Factor  [author] Mar 20, 2021 @ 6:03pm
Sorry for not responding in a while.

@Tomice. Thanks for pointing out children becoming disciples. That was unintended. I will add a check to make sure they are adults.

@Killer Turnus, you can't tell them to study, but can assign them as disciples if you are a monarchy.
Tomice Mar 20, 2021 @ 11:45am
I tried to remove the restriction for office holders, but no button appeared for my young ruler - is there anything else that has to be added for a scheme to be actively selectable? Something in the GUI files?
Tomice Mar 20, 2021 @ 10:19am
Thank you for this amazing and important mod!

A few suggestions after trying it in a playthrough and looking through your files:

1) Disallow children to be disciples. It interferes with their normal "growing up" and "becoming a great X" schemes. They lose stat points they could have got from the normal schemes that tick monthly and can't be a disciple twice, making "disciple" a trap choice for under 16 year olds.

2) You might consider increasing the points a child gets from the two basic schemes instead, as they are generally perceived as too low, resulting in a drop of character quality after the first generation:
https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/threads/optimizing-stats-for-heirs.1395359/
https://www.reddit.com/r/Imperator/comments/m00vua/childhood_education_explained/
I personally increase the childhood points by a third and double the "becoming a ...." points.
Tomice Mar 20, 2021 @ 10:19am
3) I'm not sure it's necessary to disallow office holders from studying, an age limit might suffice. Antiquity wasn't as stressful as todays world, even a top politician probably had time to discuss with a philosopher or read a book. It would also be immersive if office holders would be the ones that learn the most due to their special insights.

4) The cost (I believe 5/month) is a bit steep, as I rarely see the study in practical gameplay. Few characters can afford it, especially if office holders are excluded.

5) I would also allow the ruler to study. It has a high oppurtunity cost anyway (you can't "influence stakeholders" at the same time, a very important scheme!) and it would help if you're stuck with a bad king for decades in a monarchy.

6) You shouldn't make the forum a prerequisite for better oratory studying, as it is considered a bad choice in the current meta to increase the freeman desired ratio of your capital. I'd suggest the grand theatre instead.

Oh God! That is the mod I was looking for. My congratz Twiddle for your work!
Killer Turnus Mar 12, 2021 @ 7:34am
So i'm having trouble figuring out how to use the mod. How do i tell my kids to learn?

Here are simp_chinese translation I just made: Google Drive [drive.google.com]
And I hope you can intergrate it to mod.

Works fine with 2.0
Twiddle Factor  [author] Feb 25, 2021 @ 4:47am
I had some time today and fixed the bug mentioned by dezuman. The mod also seems to work fine with the current patch. Please let me know if you have any issues.
Twiddle Factor  [author] Feb 25, 2021 @ 4:02am
@dezuman, Oops... good catch, thank you for pointing that out. Ill fix that when I get the chance to update the mod.
Twiddle Factor  [author] Feb 25, 2021 @ 3:59am
I haven't had a chance to play Imperator since the update yet, but I can't see why it would need any updating, unless the way schemes work has been changed.

It can take some time for characters to actually use the schemes. Also, with the newest update, the study schemes require an academy in the capital.
dezuman Feb 25, 2021 @ 3:59am
There's a logic issue in the on-actions that assign stat improvements after studying: A die roll is cast, and then the following is computed:
1. if roll < (static limit) -> +1 stat
2. roll = roll / 2
3. if roll < (static limit) -> +1 stat
4. roll = roll / 2
5. if roll < (static limit) -> +1 stat

The issue is that if the first condition passes, then all following will too. Reasonably roll should be *increased* between the rounds in order to be meaningful.
Constokivepolis Feb 23, 2021 @ 12:45pm
up?
HumanPlayer6454 Feb 18, 2021 @ 6:40pm
Is it compatible with the new update?I cant seem to find the schemes
Landstander Feb 18, 2021 @ 4:52pm
whats sad is that this isnt in the game
Twiddle Factor  [author] Jan 20, 2021 @ 4:12am
There is no age limit. The title was only a joke, and the schemes are not meant to literally represent characters going to school. I don't think there was anything like Universities where people would obtain a higher education in the ancient world. The schemes are meant to represent characters spending their leisurely time reading, training or pursuing other activities that would improve their stats.

For example, martial could include reading about the conquests of Alexander or training. Finesse could be going to the market and haggling. Charisma could be practising one's oratory skills, etc.
Lex Jan 20, 2021 @ 12:39am
is this age bound? would be weird if an 80 year old character goes back to school. i mean happens just not often enough to make it a thing
J2R Jan 18, 2021 @ 3:56am
love the mod name lmao, subscribed!
TrJacobin Jan 17, 2021 @ 8:04am
Wow! NOW THIS is how you make buildings and investments matter PARADOX...yeah, I'm looking right at you Imperator Team...take note :D
Twiddle Factor  [author] Jan 15, 2021 @ 12:50am
@Dragonpants: the scheme already costs some of the character's wealth each month, but I really like your idea of having buildings affect the scheme somehow. Right now, the player is no real influence over the scheme, other than maybe bribing characters so that they have enough money to study, but having buildings in the capital affect the outcome would be a good idea. An interesting idea would be to make the buildings alter the chance of getting a successful outcome, or even give a chance for several points to be added.
[BSB] xilanna Jan 14, 2021 @ 2:52pm
Been wanting something like this for a long time, so great job! Some extra suggestions to add a little depth and immersion (and maybe balance): Make it so this is only possible if you have an academy in your capital and make it cost some of the character's wealth per month.
