It could be mod load order that messed things up, or consequences of some recent updates.
@kgptzac,
In fact, there is update ready for the mod. It adds Avali name lists, diplomatic entries; slightly improves animations (3.0 compatible): https://www.dropbox.com/s/zyjduiie55sbti5/avali_animated_portraits_v0_6_7_blinking.zip?dl=1
This one is for manual install, however (instructions are in comments below), as I cannot update page's content for the moment.
Also it would be great if the localisation would include things like vanilla species so the flavor text with diplomacy would work better.
Is there "invisible portrait" issue?
Are portraits simply missing like the mod was never loaded?
You may just drop-with-replace those assets into Steam\SteamApps\workshop\content\281990\2309129543 folder (mod's Workshop version folder). However, Steam would probably restore the folder after some time.
It would be better to just make "local mod" with game launcher. Hit "Upload mod", then "Create mod". After filling new mod data, the launcher will create .mod file and a folder for it. By default, in Documents\Paradox Interactive\Stellaris\mod\NewModName. Now you just drop those assets into that folder.
Don't forget to enable this local mod in the game launcher afterwards.
That's.. odd. I'll look into it.
Yes, it is. We're just having some hard times sorting IRL things out.

Given I tried multi-language localization, consider it a "beta-test".
Is the problem still actual?
Just did a test run - game update does not interfere with the mod.
Before "Portraitobject" there were errors of failing to find certain weapon parts of starbases, but I'm unsure how that could crash the game this way.
The error log was pretty big but I've come to suspect most of the errors were false positives; the crash culprit would be at the bottom.
I use only current version; I've never rolled back to previous versions.
My mods in use; will add you to view: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1mfj5ro0JI7NiRLwfI-nbGZ5Lhtdl_zra?usp=sharing
My pastebin errors from a few days ago: https://pastebin.com/hfn6DbN7
Does "[portraitobject.cpp:493]: Failed to find portrait selector" specifies the selector (portrait group)?
Are there any other errors beside "portraitobject" one? Or, if there are many, suspicious ones?
If it doesn't and/or there are many, you could try to find broken mod(s) by enabling them one by one.
Even if there are no portrait mods enabled (or any other that utilize "gfx" folder), there might be a file (in "common" folder, for example), which gets overwritten - and some important code lines with it, so "portraitobject" is just a side effect of some major error.
I'm afraid, it's the best I can suggest without seeing actual files.
Also, did you revert to previous version from 3.0.1? I mean "getting back in".
New update ignored portraits, but heavily modified many inner engine files, including planet view, jobs and ethics.
Maybe, some of mods still use 3.0.1 syntax or something?
Your mod is cleared, not guilty. I use a lot of mods but am quite careful to only use well-starred ones that are current version compatible or very close thereof. I enable no other mods that I know to modify portrait, though my own in-testing "Spiritualist Materialists" mod overwrites both "00_ethics" and multiple pop_jobs folders.
Couldn't recreate the problem yet. Is the error regular? Do you use any other mods (any that might modify portraits or/and 'common' folder)?
Also, do i get this right: planet view = window, that pops up after a click on a planet?
Hadn't played stellaris in a while and was still using the edit that you'd uploaded to a file sharing service.
Might be worth changing the mod title to 3.0 though, to clear any confusion.
It is somewhat hard to tell, as I had little experience with multiplayer.
Following general cases, guess all players in a session would have to download the mod. The same would apply for every other mod, I assume.
As I said, “non-replacer” portrait mods are not achievement compatible. "Replacer" types - are. The method you described looks similar to “replacer” (or “intrusive”) one, also listed on “Portrait modding” PdxWiki page.
(otherwise, I have no idea how I can put a portrait under a category without modifying “common” folder)
Certainly, I could do such a thing, however this would mean no custom namelists, insults/compliments/other entries (both are coming in the nearest update of the mod), default robot types and other things, which are important for some people.
Besides, the mod was made the way it is, among oher things, because of compatibility reasons – including older (static) version of the mod itself (which is not an issue anymore, but still).
Except for “random species” thing – I simply forgot about that. Will fix it in the nearest update.
If you remove the "Avali" *category* and put the Avali portraits in an existing category (Avian would work well), and also removed the special check for the robot portraits, it would be achievement-compatible. I would appreciate if you do this, or more likely, make a separate version for this - the portrait category really doesn't matter (and it might even be better to put it in Avian), and I don't personally care about the robot portraits as I don't make many robots when I play. Also, why did you make it so that Avali portraits are banned for randomly generated species?
Yes, the mod allows turning "Ironman" mode on; however, as with all "non-replacer" portrait mods, it is not achievements compatible.
Yes, and I'm on it. Localized insults/compliments will be added with nearest update of the mod.
