i recommend using Paint.NET if you want a free image editor with a layer system, (its what i use)

The wire frames were causing me an EXTRAORDINARY amount of trouble with paint 3D

just to check, are you aware of the wireframe templates? the ones which show all the lines? (they are included in the templates folder alongside the solid-color ones)

Thankyou franks, you the best. I was about to weigh my options on how much I wanted to make the skin but now I have restored determination!

the default trains (like the warbonnet) are not made using a texture, they are actually made with custom meshes, hence why they are much more crisp then liveries made with images.

As for adding details to the liveries, one option is to download a more complex livery (where someone has filled in the details) then find the locally downloaded files (through steam) and use that as a template

are there anyplaces where I might find the Stock liveries. Using the Santa fe war/blue bonnet as a template so that details like the port holes and door paints could be changed more easily.

I was working on an f7 livery and the lines and the slight opaque shading of the detailed f7 skin is giving me a TON of trouble. I am trying to paint the rear door so that its not all one solid color and pops kind of like the way the warbonet f7 has its livery done. Do you happen to have a high detail version of the f7 that has more of the open paint bucketable regions like the doors and the port holes like how there are high detail templates for the flyer and other trains. I have lost a solid 5 hours fighting the lines to get the back door looking decent and I would count myself at best 40% done. I havn't even started on the rest of the entire locomotive. any help would be GREATLY appreciated
