I made this before the thruster damage update.
Now it's pretty much obsolete because of large ship drills / mods.

There is three large thrusters where the cockpit connects inside the dish. The moment the ship tries to stop, the thrusters break the cockpit from the ship.

Thanks for all the feedback! As mentioned before, this is merely a proof of concept to see if this kind of thing would even work. I might make more changes in the future, and I'll probably end up using such a design in survival/multiplayer.

I noticed that some debris is not caught by the collection bin. A larger bin would prevent the loss of any debris.

@Wolfgar: if it's a copy-paste then it'll fail: you'd have to copy-paste both the mining ship as well as the second gravity generating ship inside.

For deeper mining, I would extend the drills further from the collection area, allowing for deep-core mining as well. Also, the vertical stems ought to be removed, as mentioned previously. Other than that, solid design.

I dont know if I am just dense or something but I tried this ship and the debris just floated around... I took the ship apart and found no grav gen in it! I will try it again but I may need a refund! Otherwise good design basis.

I have noticed a design flaw. The cockpit is too far forewards, if it was further aft, then it wouldn't break off at drilling.

I love the Space Engineers community. The devs could never update the game again and I'd still be satisfied with my purchase.

TIP: You can remove the little stem in the collection area if you're having trouble picking up the rocks for whatever reason, the cockpit is supported by two other struts.
