The CIA gave some basic training, uniforms, and weapons to some Cuban rebels and sent them to invade. The CIA promised that the US military would support them. When the time came, US political and military leaders refused, largely because they knew nothing about the deal in advance.
The CIA lost a great deal of its authority because of that deal.
Because the rebels believed they would get support, but did not, they ended up getting slaughtered.
Yet, somehow, the US government still wonders why people in that region do not believe them!
