Awesome! Wish the base game looked this good!

Great map! I have Gathering Storm and it worked perfectly.

Any update? I think this map is causing game crashed but im not 100% sure

@Kex. If you're tenacious enough, most things can be made to work. Thanks for confirming that the workaround exists to play this map under the GS ruleset. I don't remember now if I placed Mt Kilimanjaro on this map, but I'm sure I did on the other two I posted. If I understand the GS scripting correctly, Kilimanjaro will become a volcano with the GS expansion. So you at least have one, even if these maps weren't made for GS...
Settle right next to that one to re-enact your own personal Pompeii.
Kex Nov 17, 2019 @ 10:18am
The map is entirely playable with GS, just checkmark the "Ignore warnings about compatibility" in the mod's tab ingame. There'll be no volcanoes or geothermal fissures, but all other disasters work, including floods.

Great map to my taste. The only problem I've had is that certain civs (America, in particular) *always* (and regardless of the Standard/Legendary start switch) fall to that one snowy mountains spot (west from the Mosquito Marshes) from which it is incredibly hard to expand due to the mountains and the lake. Had to give up playing Teddy at this map after the 5th attempt or so :'D

P.S. Machu Pikchu is absolutely OP on this map.

@SlayersHero This map mod contains one hand-drawn map, with random starting positions, for best replayability. A mod that would help you randomly generate maps should/would be labeled a map script (and might be found in the Map Utilities-category). There were some awesome ones of those in the Civ V workshop (I liked the Tectonic map script best), but it doesn't seem anyone has cared to come up with something similar for Civ VI yet. It's a huge undertaking, and I understand Civ VI map generation algorithms don't lend themselves to that task.
DrewbieDoobyDoo Nov 2, 2019 @ 10:31pm
Do these maps randomly generate, or is it a set map to play on...excuse my ignorance since I have only recently gotten into modding games.

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD
The World is a Sandbox  [author] Oct 9, 2019 @ 9:39am
@Glemt The custom map is actually of the type "Continents", i.e. under the R&F ruleset it's got its own custom name. If under the GS ruleset that name goes away, but the FEATURES of the map remain (the map still looks like the map from the R&F ruleset), then @Max had a point. If it's of course a completely random Continents-type map all of a sudden, then I also have no idea how @Max managed. I've removed the GS references from the "How To Play This Map" regardless.
Glemt Oct 9, 2019 @ 12:16am
I checked. Regardless of the compatibility warning, if I select the map in advanced set-up, then click Gathering Storm ruleset, it automatically goes back to continents.

So, I don't know how Max did it, but the compatibility warning seems to have nothing to do with it.

The only way this map shows up in the selection screen is picking a non-GS ruleset.

The World is a Sandbox  [author] Oct 7, 2019 @ 1:45pm
@jennyandblair I don't plan on buying the GS expansion. The only reason I'm even active with Civ VI is GrrrArrrg's - literally - game-changing mod. It helped me salvage my investment in this game by allowing me to get some mileage out of my ill-advised purchase (of the base game and R&F). I'm no fan of the direction Firaxis has taken this franchise, and I won't part with another 30 bucks to reward them for it. I'm confident others will post great maps made specifically for the GS expansion. Sorry I'm not of any help.
The World is a Sandbox  [author] Oct 7, 2019 @ 1:41pm
@jennyandblair I don't own the GS expansion, so the instructions I posted above rely on what @Max reported over at the other map I posted: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1877974584 He sounded quite knowledgeable, so I trust what he described to work (and hence I added the instructions above). I can't know why that didn't work for you now, and unfortunately, I have no means to help figure it out with you. If more people report that the map won't run under the Gathering Storm ruleset, I'll remove the instructions above. So please, all: report away!
cachow Oct 7, 2019 @ 12:35pm
i tried to enable it the way you said in the desrcription but it didnt work
cachow Oct 7, 2019 @ 12:25pm
Can you please make itfor Gathering Storm if possible because i dont have rise and fall
The World is a Sandbox  [author] Oct 6, 2019 @ 1:08pm
@andres r I updated the "How to Play This Map" section above.

Wow, the sense of entitlement is strong with some!
Geminus Leonem Oct 6, 2019 @ 6:55am
Seriously dude, just get GS. Noone in their right mind that owns CIV will check mods without owning the full game.

And lose that hipster teen edge, it's unbecoming.
andres r Oct 6, 2019 @ 5:11am
How can I use this with GS ruleset? Can I convert it somehow?
Bunzato Oct 6, 2019 @ 2:39am
I would downvote it a thousand times because of your attitude lol.
The World is a Sandbox  [author] Oct 6, 2019 @ 2:32am
@Bunzato Too bad you already voted it down. Can't vote it down twice. I know you wish you could. Troll.
Bunzato Oct 5, 2019 @ 12:37pm
It's not compatible with GS? lol.
3AlanKing3 Oct 5, 2019 @ 9:34am
Oh I see, thanks for the reply! Btw, I'm really enjoying this map so far! Magnificent work!
The World is a Sandbox  [author] Oct 5, 2019 @ 2:01am
@3AlanKing3 There are no pre-set starting locations on this map. It uses the same algorithms that the game uses for a random map. Your starting point will be dependent on what civ you are, which terrain is associated with that civ, and so forth... If you are - say - Arabia, it'll try to place you on a desert hex. And since there aren't that many of those, you may see repetitive patterns. That's why I suggest to use "Legendary" starts, instead of "Standard" starts, because that opens up more random starting points.
The World is a Sandbox  [author] Oct 5, 2019 @ 1:55am
@CapnGriz Short answer: no.
3AlanKing3 Oct 4, 2019 @ 7:39pm
Are there only 3 locations where the human player can start the game at?
CapnGriz Oct 4, 2019 @ 2:12pm
Is this compatible with Gathering Storm?
The World is a Sandbox  [author] Oct 4, 2019 @ 11:20am
@JNR Yes, the Environmental Reskin mod by GrrrArrrg is a stand-alone mod. This map was made to make BEST USE of that mod. If you play this map without that mod, I have no idea how that will look, and - frankly - I don't care and have never tested/looked at it that way, because the Vanilla aesthetic of Civ VI is not my cup of tea. If you prefer the Vanilla version of Civ VI, playing this map misses the whole point of me making it. Thanks for the exchange; this should help clarify things for people who look at this and skipped the Description above.
The World is a Sandbox  [author] Oct 4, 2019 @ 11:10am
@View The Phenom Re: screenshot of full map. That's a personal preference. Your preference is to know the map before playing it. My preference always has been to NOT know a map beforehand, so that I can have fun exploring it, being surprised by it, and having to adjust my strategy on the fly based on what I find. I offer this map for folks like me, for whom exploring is 90% of the allure of the Civilization franchise. I posted the screenshots to prove that a lot of thought went into it, and you probably won't be disappointed as you explore this world. If exploring the unknown is not your thing, skip over this one. But don't vote it down just because!
The World is a Sandbox  [author] Oct 4, 2019 @ 11:02am
@View The Phenom I designed this map specifically, and really only, for its use with GrrrArrrg's mod. I go to great lengths in the Description to point that out. So - yes - the screenshots show the map with GrrrArrrg's mod enabled, and to get the same results, you need to enable that mod, as I point out in "How to Play This Map". Not sure how to make that any more clear.
JNR Oct 4, 2019 @ 11:02am
what does the art style even have to do with this map? They're separate mods, right? Would be nice to have screenshots of the map with vanilla graphics too for those who prefer it that way. That's the cool thing about mods, people can customize their experience.

By the way, it's rather ungrateful to call the devs greedy for charging for their work while praising the reskin mod and making heavy use of it for your mod presentation.
View The Phenom Oct 4, 2019 @ 10:21am
If you're going to release a map, you should probably provide a full image of it; not just screen-shots using someone else's mod. Without that, you're requiring players to install and play through the map just to figure out whether they want to use it or not; I'm sure that has more to do with down-votes than just one player's post (which isn't trolling, but makes a good point).

As it's displayed now, it looks like your mod automatically implements the re-skin from someone else. Can come off as misleading, even if unintentional.
(THEA) Duke Jorgas Oct 4, 2019 @ 5:20am
Wow, your maps are tempting me to play Civ VI again. I wholeheartedly agree with you, the art style of VI is half of why I don't play it. Now I just need to buy the expansions for Civ VI... unfortunately the gameplay still doesn't agree with me. Your maps look gorgeous, anyways!
The World is a Sandbox  [author] Oct 4, 2019 @ 1:44am
@ualbiner It's all up to you. Personally, I've regressed at King level, because I spend way too much time (and money) planting trees to salvage the look of my empires. The map I posted is just a skeleton. It's up to you to "put flesh on the bones", i.e. make smart/(compromise) choices, so that your provinces don't only deliver, but look good while doing it. Godspeed.
The World is a Sandbox  [author] Oct 4, 2019 @ 1:34am
@GabeIsAFat I didn't know GrrrArrg is a Dark Sider. That would make his (their) mod a ... FREE DLC! Mind blown.
ualbiner Oct 3, 2019 @ 8:35pm
I've grown fond of Civ 6 art style, but I gotta admit your maps look so stunning with the Environmental Skin...
otto Oct 3, 2019 @ 7:00pm
Love the map, cant wait to use it! (Voted up too :) ) Maybe a bit too harsh on Firaxis though? Considering the author of the mod (GrrrArrrg) is a Firaxis dev that was asked to make the mod by the game producers. While I may not agree, I do get the criticism and totally agree on the randomly generated maps being disjointed.

Great map!
The World is a Sandbox  [author] Oct 3, 2019 @ 3:09pm
Thanks, @livius_civis_tergestinus. And if you haven't already, consider giving this map a thumbs up. 'Cause @"Pretentious much"Bonzato and his buddies have been busy rating this one down. Probably without having looked at the actual map even once.
Always sad if trolls make things that other people might like disappear on the Workshop, just by ganging up and voting it down.
Livius civis tergestinus Oct 3, 2019 @ 7:46am
Very nice ! Thank you !
The World is a Sandbox  [author] Oct 2, 2019 @ 8:58pm
Paradox and now also Firaxis: sell you a base game for full price, and it requires two (!) expensive expansions to make that game not feel "too empty", as you say. No shame, those two.
Thanks for the kind words on the map. I'm sorry this one will only be for Rise & Fall. It's actually amazing how few custom maps are getting made for Civ VI. Looks like there are only 17 uploaded as of today. For Civ V, there are 2,028 right now showing in the Workshop. That's pretty telling...
Crouton Oct 2, 2019 @ 7:39pm
If you have no intention to update this very well constructed map to GS, that's understandable, but having those features would make the gameplay more engaging, I feel. Vanilla (and to an extent R&F) just feel too empty in some points to really enjoy the experience Civ provides.

I mean, late game is much more interesting with GS at least.
The World is a Sandbox  [author] Sep 30, 2019 @ 8:20am
I've been working on a truly humongous (Huge) map for R&F that can seed as many as 20 Civs. Still testing that, but will post probably this week. That'll be it for the Civilization franchise for me. I have no plans to purchase GS.
Metalmind Sep 29, 2019 @ 10:42pm
Looks like an interesting map!

Do you plan to update it for Gathering Storm at some point?
The World is a Sandbox  [author] Sep 29, 2019 @ 3:10pm
My playstyle is to "lose" myself in games. With Civ V's somewhat realistic maps, it was easier to make believe you'd be the British Empire colonizing a continent. And you could really make those maps look anything but "drab, dull, and depressing". I posted a few custom maps back in the day for Civ V here on the workshop, and those could look quite beautiful. Civ VI as offered by Firaxis on the other hand never lets you forget that you're just playing a game. Even without the grid superimposed, you can immediately tell each square - like a chessboard - 'cause Firaxis' design choices prevent Civ VI's maps to mesh into one harmonious whole. So when I sound a bit miffed, it's because Firaxis removed a mainstay of my gaming past from a category of games I'd play (semi-realistic, turn-based grand strategy), and moved it into a category that has never meant anything to me (Minecraft and the like).
The World is a Sandbox  [author] Sep 29, 2019 @ 3:09pm
While I now admit that my characterization of Civ VI's design language is unnecessary polarizing, I'll leave it up there so people can follow what we've been discussing.
Thanks for the input.
emperor_ike Sep 29, 2019 @ 11:12am
Mostly by calling it "candy crush" and "tacky mobile game" style, especially when it's been shown that 'cartoony' art in games (and other media) provides them longer lifespans, which, with the addition of actual and whole mod support in the form of this very workshop, is apparently exactly what Firaxis was going for.
Series vet here, from the launch of 1, and 5's art style was frankly drab, dull, and depressing at the best of times - going back just to look at screenshots of its terrain makes me feel off, like an uncanny-valley feeling, to say nothing of all the gameplay problems it, in my opinion, had.
They brought the series back to life with 6.
That said, this is exactly why we needed workshop support - so everyone who doesn't like it can inject whatever art style they want back into it. But that, in turn, means you need to not put them down for the direction they chose: at the same time, they provided you options and other paths to take to customize it for yourself.
guttermanek Sep 29, 2019 @ 10:41am
I agree that the cartoon look wasn't great for Civ 6, and I don't think you sounded pretentious.
The World is a Sandbox  [author] Sep 29, 2019 @ 8:37am
If it's my diatribe on Firaxis' design choice for Civ VI, that's just my honest disappointment about the direction the developers chose to take one of my favorite game franchises. But, if that's what ticked you off, let me know that, too.
