Report a translation problem
I use Mod Updater mod, and clicked on the mod settings for the simpler pip planting, changed the numbers from 60 -> 30, 300 -> 200, and moved the plants in area from 0 -> 1. Restarted game, was nervous they wouldn't plant (it ended up being from gas pressure too low) and it is now working. It seems like the pip planting overlay is reflecting their ability? Because places where a pip should not be able to plant are showing green for me.
If it is not working for you try messing with the settings, restart, and check there isn't something else preventing it.
I've adjusted the settings, restarted, loaded the save, went back to menu, and loaded the save waiting for them to plant and nothing... when that didn't work, attempted several more times of loading the same save to see "till it works" and nothing. I also created a new save with the same as above and also readjusting the settings.
I'm also using pip planting overlay and its showing green for what they don't want to bury. Is a fix for this "old bug" in the works?
It's an old bug. My last message:
The rules only apply if you open a save, go back to the menu, and open the save again.
for the detection, what matter is the tile where the pip put the seed, so the center is not the plant itself.
So with 3 for detection radius, it will detect from the tile + 3 tile above. but if there is 4 tile and then a plant in the tile above, then the space between both tile is 4, and each box are in the area of the other.
if that the only plant, with 2 max plant radius, it's ok, but if there is something on the left or the right of the 1st plant, then the one above will detect it.
For the example you did, it's normal that it's not working, because where you put the 1 isn't the center.

Just one thing: When I was setting plantDetectionRadius = 3 and to maxPlantsInRadius = 2, the plants in 4 high rooms above and below were blocking the planting in the middle. To the sides the radius works as expected, just not vertically. It feels like the detection radius is not a square, but a rectangle where the height 1 tile higher.
Maybe I just understood the mechanic incorrectly, but I assumed with 4 high rooms and a radius of 3 the planting would still be possible, but it is not.

PS: If you really want the plants out of void, you can always just use the debug mode or sandbox tools. Why go the long way of modding?
