"Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain." - Exodus 20:7

Using the Lord's name in vain means using it as a common word instead of giving proper reverence. In this case - using it as an interjection. By being careful not to do this and limiting exposure to instances of using the Lord's name in vain is one way to maintain proper respect for God.
