An M4 carbine can be fired in two ways, semi-automatic (Which fires one round when the trigger is pulled) and three round bursts (Which fires three rounds very quickly when the trigger is pulled). Unlike the M4A1, which fires automatically when the trigger is pulled.
M4A1 - Automatic Rifle
M16 (a3 and a4 variants) - Burst
An M4 is a burst and semi-automatic carbine and an M4A1 is an automatic and semi-automatic carbine, if I am correct.
Are you ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ dumb? An M4 is Automatic you dumbass
You can make the gun semi, look in the bottom right hand corner when holding the weapon, and you'll see auto. Press V or what ever letter is in brackets next to it and you'll change to semi and safety.
