not a gemstone but definetly a standout
didn't thought I'd be scared by something I won't even see

The map keeps you on your toes in the same way the old Bendy demo did; By giving more and more bits of lore subtly planted in places you as a player are naturally drawn to interact with, like open books and bookshelves, the map lets you slowly piece the story together on your own even before the ending (Which I will not spoil because I want everyone here to check it out for themselves). It builds the tension and horror while also driving you, the player, forward. While the story itself doesn't gel well with most of AHIT's vibe, it still gives me genuine chills every time I play it because of how masterfully it's been put together

The Painted World is an incredible tragedy executed with a style that would make most horror games blush. It's simultaneously beautiful and terrifying, and that's why The Painted World is my second favourite AHIT fan map.

It has taken me a while to fully articulate both why I love this map and how to express it, but I think I've got it, so here's Alex's full review of The Painted World.

I fully and unironically believe that The Painted World is the second greatest AHIT fan map I've ever played, On a gameplay level, it uses the base mechanics in AHIT to further itself, as well as adding new mechanics that it very intuitively tells you how to use, blending both sides together in a way that fascinates me

It takes place in an unfamiliar environment that still keeps the AHIT charm, with its use of autumn trees and dark caves merged with an old mansion or castle. The atmosphere is set from the first scene and then ripped away from you the second you progress the plot, while setting up a mystery in the opening cutscene that's resolved later on in a genuinely heartfelt moment.

The sense of sheer panic you set up with the constant tremors, along with the paranoia brought in by the notes, the lantern's description, the broken bars and ball-and-chains, and even little things like Sophia's room seemingly locking you in, make the player feel completely helpless. Even if I had the feeling there was no real monster, I kept hiding under the benches, just in case. Which made the moment the monster ACTUALLY APPEARS even more frightening, as I had nowhere to hide.

I found myself genuinely feeling anxious and panicked throughout because of the constant building of tension. And the fact I got Ending 2 first because I was able to recognize the painting as a Subcon Painting made me feel genuinely rewarded for paying close attention to small details. Even if there was no real threat, I still FELT threatened.

This map is genuinely excellent. Applause to you, my friend, because you had me on the edge of my seat throughout.

I know it's been years since this was uploaded, but I wanted to give my thoughts on this. I find myself struggling with horror mods for this game, mostly because I'm always expecting something scary going in. However, I didn't read through the description of this map, and in all honesty? That was probably for the best.

I compare a lot of horror maps to Vanessa's Manor, because that level had the advantage of being a surprise for many new players. And most horror mods fail to capture that same feeling, even going into it blind. However, this? This not only met those expectations, but I firmly believe a blind run of this level is more tense than a blind run of Vanessa's Manor. There's something primal about the unseen monster that's constantly lurking. But to talk about it more in depth, I'd like to put the rest of this in spoilers... and in a second comment, cuz this is getting long.

I really love this level!!
starbitbanhi Sep 20, 2022 @ 11:33pm
Level had amazing atmosphere, and the dark parts were wonderfully tense!
TurboShell May 1, 2022 @ 11:54am
i subscribed without really looking at the description or screenshots, definitely didn't expect a horror level from this, but god damn was it good. The story and atmosphere were incredible and the music was top notch

While using the modding tools, I haven't messed around with lighting too much... not yet, at least.
I would like to create something similar to this level of yours, though: a naturally dark environment that you can light up.

Could I ask you how you did it? How you created the darkness? Having no light sources, using lower brightness, etc. did not seem to work for me.
Are the textures naturally that dark? Or are you using a custom script, perhaps?

I'd really appreciate if you could help me out. This level is as great as it was years ago when I first tried it. ^-^

me and my girlfriend were playing on stream, and neither of us were able to get the box at the top of the cliff, there was no prompt or anything

@Rude Baby Red well first of all you need to light a fire in a fireplace . I won't make any more spoilers but the ending was kinda unsatisfying if you ask me.
DASH.RABBIT Oct 26, 2019 @ 2:12pm
Would it be too much to ask for a guide to get ending 2?
kiselius(͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) Sep 5, 2019 @ 2:05pm
That thing is fantastic, well done!
Eyebrows Incorporated Aug 29, 2019 @ 12:39am
Reminded me of Amnesia the Dark Descent in atmosphere, dialogue, tension. It was wonderful. The only thing I want is more game to play because it was so good.

Brilliant map! Really tense atmosphere. Your level design is stunning especially the outdoors area! Played this with another person from Online Party and it was so much fun! Awesome work!
Paigels Jul 16, 2019 @ 11:38pm
Although, I didn't feel that satisfied in finding the second ending when I don't really get to see what it did. I'm assuming the girl went heaven or something, but killing her is no different then having the monster kill her. I was hoping we would actually properly save her and feel like what we did mattered. This is a small complaint though in a wave of really, really good atmosphere and legitimate fear. Once again, well done.
Paigels Jul 16, 2019 @ 11:38pm
This mod is amazing and I'm disappointed in myself for not playing it sooner. I didn't look into this mod too much so I was surprised when it turned out to be horror. The first area is unbelievably beautiful by the way, it's perfect for screenshots. I am god awful with horror games, so the uncertainty of whether there really was a monster or if you were just fucking with me had me questioning everything I did. The tables you can hide under and the text saying the lantern was dangerous to use was very, very clever. Well played. The atmosphere in this is amazing . Even when I knew the footsteps were just sound effects, it still made me turn off my lantern and wait for them to stop. Overall, masterfully done.
Bent Jun 11, 2019 @ 9:35pm
Fricc. We're both tremendously stupid. Thank you
Werti100  [author] Jun 11, 2019 @ 8:53pm
@Bent Bean there's supposed to be a box up there the player can grab and give to the other.
Bent Jun 11, 2019 @ 8:30pm
I know that but how does the other player get up? The ladder keeps saying it's broken and we can't do anything about it.
Werti100  [author] Jun 11, 2019 @ 7:10am
@Bent Bean with the box puzzle? just jump on the head of the other player
Bent Jun 11, 2019 @ 12:07am
I cannot beat this in co op. I get stuck at Act 2, near the exit
Werti100  [author] Jun 9, 2019 @ 6:55am
@Taiga the door doesn't get locked, I have an invisible block on there that I turn on the collision on it
Taiga Jun 8, 2019 @ 11:58pm
Honestly? One of the best atmospheres I've seen in a while. I seriously thought I was about to get caught at any moment. You perfectly nailed it. I started to get suspicious in the latter parts about the actual safety situation... and then I checked the comments in this thread. Well played, very well played.

Though on another note, I am curious: did that door really lock behind you or not?

I'll be waiting for your next mods:3

Sadly, when the second level is loaded the game crashes:sad_creep:

Nice job, this was enjoyable. Someone's been playing Amnesia/Penumbra.
Seren May 27, 2019 @ 11:54am
This map is perfect! I feel nostalgic since i am a LittleBigPlanet veteran and back then i enjoyed the community levels before the servers shut down. Thanks for making me feel the same joy again!
Werti100  [author] May 27, 2019 @ 11:52am
Thank you! I most certainly will.
Seren May 27, 2019 @ 11:52am
I love it! Keep up the great work!
liaojr0816 May 26, 2019 @ 8:25am
nvm, read through the comment it can kill you only in a specific moment
liaojr0816 May 26, 2019 @ 7:37am
Man this mod is awesome I first thought it is a map focusing on exploration with great artstyle but the horror elements really surprised me. That is definitely sth new. Though i wonder if you can really die from the monster or is it just an imagination
Werti100  [author] May 22, 2019 @ 3:26pm
thanks :)
Dano May 22, 2019 @ 3:13pm
Super nice. It's not my kind of thing really, but I did enjoy the amount of effort that went into it, and I know it's good. Congrats
Werti100  [author] May 18, 2019 @ 9:43pm
@PalmTree Thank you for the nice comment! :)
PalmTree May 18, 2019 @ 9:36pm
I ended up loving it! The atmosphere was top-notch, and I really enjoyed all the puzzles.

I liked how the story was revealed bit by bit, and the story was pretty great itself. It made me want to press forward despite how nervous I was, just to find out how it ended, which I think just goes to show exactly how good it was.
Werti100  [author] May 17, 2019 @ 12:27pm
Updated for dlc2, if you were too afraid to play it, try with another person!
Werti100  [author] May 17, 2019 @ 10:17am
@PalmTree I'd say it's scarier than Vanessas Manor and yes, more along the lign of silent hill.
PalmTree May 17, 2019 @ 10:09am
I want to try it out, because it looks absolutely beautiful, but

I'm admittedly not very good with horror. Is the level of horror in this mod something comparable to Queen Vanessa's Manor, or is it more in line with actual horror games like Silent Hill?
Papi the harpy May 9, 2019 @ 4:56pm
i got the painting ending
