To BTFO Konrad even more:

The Legion is not even vaguely similar to the phalanx in concept. The Legion is a military unit, such as a company or brigade, while a phalanx was the style of fighting, like Karate and line infantry tactic.

Both Roman and Greek armies HEAVILY employed ranged skirmishers, in the form of velites, and later, auxilary slingers, archers, and javelinmen within the Roman forces. Even the primary infantry force, the Legionarii, held with him 2 throwing spears and a slingshot. And the Greeks are just as famed for their Cretan archers as they are for their phalanxes.

Notice how you only picked the two major forces in Antiquity to focus on heavy infantry to argue that archery is somehow not that effective. The Romans would fight and constantly struggle against Parthia, and later on the Sassanids, as they employed heavy horse archers and cataphracts, which would simply run away from the Roman legionarii if they decided a battle would not be in their favour.

I change Heroic Wars and turn it in a campaign mod, i work at moment in many aspects to upload it. True Warrios battle mod add 2 better units for recruit to every faction in start of game and remove very weak units, better for IA make moderate armies and no more weak armies.

So you deleted your Heroic Wars mod, then? Was that included in your True Warriors in Battle mod now? Thank you...

All weapons are nerfed. Range to 250 or 275 lead slinger. Damage reduced for all weapons.

Slingers are a bit overpowered towards units with shield... Maybe reduce their damage a bit..

Hello, quick question, so is this mod included in your Heroic Wars which I just need to use that one? Or I will have to use these two together? Thank you!

Every Roman Soldiers carry slingers, pilum and others throwning weapons, Alexander use skirmishers, slingers, archers and cavalry to attack and defend, more the fantasy say Legion and in mind come roman soldiers using the gladios, the shield wall and forgotten logistic, camps, trenchs, money. In the Battle of Lechaeum however, the Athenian Iphicrates routed an entire Spartan mora by using hit and run tactics with peltast armed with javelins and composite bows. Unprotected, phalanx were weakened by more lightly armed troops such as archers with composite bows. The testudo didn't always work. There are reports from Carrhae that Parthian arrows went through the scutum and pierced the hand holding the scutum, thus attaching the hand to the shield in an extremely painful way. There are also reports of arrows piercing feet and "stapling" them to the ground. Sorry for bad english.

A few points I'd like to make.

Firstly, its not a good idea to use Mongolian archery as a reference. It is very difficult to accurately compare the distances mentioned in the sources due to language issues. Mongolians were fairly small people, so their arm length would be relatively short. Further, the bows used by the Mongolians were far, far more advanced than anything in the period of this game (consider that an English longbow might at best shoot 320 metres.

The vast majority of deaths in this period came from hand weapons during a rout. The death toll of ranged weapons was probably lower than in the vanilla version.

In short, this mod DOES NOT make the damage and range more realistic. It makes it less so. Movies have done a lot of damage to the image of the effectiveness of ranged weapons.

Think about it this way, if ranged weapons were anywhere near as dangerous as you seem to think, why were the 2 premiere fighting forces of the period the Legion and the Phalanx?

hey Denis, i opened your mod in the pack file manager and used your mod as inspiration to make my own modification for personal use only that is compatible with DEI, i forgot to ask you first but since I have it in my private collection and not published, and it was not a direct copy but used as inspiration where to find the tables I assumed it would be ok.
Draco Dns  [author] Aug 6, 2018 @ 12:36pm
