How to fix common Logitech G502 accuracy issues in a few steps

This guide helps you fixing common accuracy issues with the Logitech G502 in a few steps, expecially in instagib modes where maximum accuracy is needed.

Disable Surface Tuning

What is Surface Tuning?

Surface Tuning is a Logitech feature which should adapt your mouse's optical sensor to a certain surface type, for example a Logitech Gaming Mousepad. Surface Tuning is the main reason of a bad accuracy most of the times, so I highly suggest disabling it, even if you actually got a Logitech Gaming Pad.

How to disable it?

In your Logitech Gaming Software, go to Surface Tuning, set it to Factory Default, and click Apply.

Lower your DPI and higher your polling rate

What is DPI?

High DPI levels can lower your accuracy. DPI stands for Dots Per Inch, and defines how much should your crosshair move for each inch. Very high DPI can lower your accuracy because your mouse becomes so over-sensitive that even a mouse click will move your crosshair.

What is Polling Rate?

Polling Rate is basically how many times your PC polls your mouse in a second. For example, a Polling Rate of 1000 will query your mouse 1000 times in a second to get crosshair movements. Highering the Polling Rate is NOT recommended in slow system because it will cause your mouse to be even less accurate.

Which DPI level should I use?

I use a DPI level of 400, but you may have to tweak it to your liking by experimenting in-game.

Which Polling Rate should I use?

A Polling Rate of 1000 Hz should be fine with Quad-Core CPUs.
For any other systems you should set it to 500 Hz.
125 Hz is too low in my opinion.
250 Hz is acceptable, but not enough most of the times.

How to change DPI and Polling Rate?

Go to your Logitech Gaming Software, click Pointer Settings, type your desired DPI (for example: 400) and click Assign default. You can also set Polling Rate in the bottom.

Disable Windows Mouse Pointer Acceleration

What is Windows Mouse Pointer Acceleration?

Windows Mouse Pointer Acceleration, also known as "Enhance pointer precision" is a Windows Feature that accelerates the mouse depending on the actual mouse movement acceleration. This can make your movements inaccurate by moving your mouse more than necessary.

How to disable it?

Depending on your Windows Operating System, you have to reach Mouse Settings through your Control Panel.

• In Mouse Settings, click the "Pointer Options" tab
  
• Untick "Enhance pointer precision"
  
• Apply

Change your Quake Live settings

To reflect your new mouse settings you also have to change your Quake Settings. You may also set Mouse Acceleration to 0 to prevent any unwanted movements during your games, since it acts just like Windows Mouse Acceleration.

Hi, I have a Logitech G502. I recently bought a new, very large gaming mouse pad, an Adata (XPG) Battleground XL Prime, which has a cordura surface. It was to replace an old Logitech mouse pad. At first, I though there was something wrong with the new XPG pad. The mouse response was just terrible with really laggy tracking and I was on the point of returing it to the retailer. Then, while searching online about the issue, I discovered this article, among several others, about the Logitech Surface Tuning feature. So, I went through the surface tuning process in G Hub. It was really easy to do and it completely fixed the tracking issue with the mouse. It is now absolutely perfect, and even better than with the old mouse pad. So, far from disabling this feature, I would highly recommend it for anyone who encounters tracking issues with a Logitech gaming mouse.

Nice Guide! This would apply to any Logitech gaming mouse that has the PMW3366 sensor and the surface tuning feature. I had a G502 and currently a G303 same sensor - leave surface tuning off its terrible for quake. not sure about new logi sensors.

Well yeah, this guide is a bit outdated. Windows 10 had severe mouse issues at high DPI values, fixed now.

Why not use a high DPI and turn down the sensitivity?
Allows for more fine grained control IMO.
