In this guide I will tell you everything you need to know about your companions.

General info about companions
There are 13 potential companions in Fallout 4.

Players may have one companion accompanying them at a time and may switch between them.

ALL perks requires maximum affinity with the companion and sometimes the completion of their quests.
Strong
Description:
Strong is a super mutant and grants the perk "berserk". Beserk gives your character 20 percent more Melee Damage if the health is down to 25%.
Location:
You can find Strong in the Trinity Tower locked up in a cell at the top along with Rex Goodman.

Quests:
You need to complete the quest "Curtain Call" to be able to recruit Strong. (If you get close to Trinity Tower you will receive a distress call from Rex Goodman. Just listen to the broadcast and the quest will start.)

Special Stuff:
Strong likes: He likes it when you eat corpses and murder non-hostiles.
Strong dislikes: He doesn't like it when you use power armor, a Vertibird, pick locks and heal Dogmeat.

You CANT romance him! (That would be really weird)

He is very skilled in using a Rocket launcher and minigun.

Carry Weight: 270

Strong is also able to wear supermutant armor!
Preston Garvey
Description
Preston Garvey is a Minutemen. After reaching the highest affinity with Preston, he grants the "United We Stand" perk, which increases damage dealt by 20% as well as increasing damage resistance by 20 points when facing 3 or more enemies at once.
Location
You can find preston in Concord in the Museum of Freedom.
Quests:
"The First Step" is a Minutemen radiant quest (and also a achievement in Fallout 4). Just talk to preston and you will get the quest.
"Taking Independence" is a Minutemen main quest and you will get it from Preston after u have 4 settlements.
Every minutemenbased quest who comes after that, requires to talk to Preston.
You can also get Minutemen radiant quests by listening to radio Freedom.

Special Stuff:
Preston likes: He likes acts of maintaining the peace, donating items and modify weapons.
Preston dislikes: Acts of selfishness and violence against non-hostiles. He doesnt like it when you steal, eat corpses and use chems.

You CAN romance him!

Carry Weight: 165

Preston is able to wear everything the player can wear.
Nick Valentine
Description:
Nick Valentine is a synth-detective. He grants the player the perk "Close to Metal" which gives the player one more guess to dial the password in terminals. Also, terminals have 50 percent less time to wait after your are locked out when Valentine is your companion.
Location:
You will find Nick in the main quest "Unlikely Valentine". After you completed the quest, you will be able to recruit him in Nick Valentine's office in Diamond City.

Quests:
Side quests:
"The Disappearing Act" The quest starts after Unlikely Valentine has been finished. Talk to Ellie Perkins in Nick Valentine's office and accept her request in solving some cases.
You will also get the other quest "The Gilded Grasshopper".

Companion quest:
"Long Time Coming" To start the quest you need to gain Nick´s approval. After that he will talk to you and gives you the quest. In this quest you need to Find the remaining 9 Eddie Winter Holotapes.

Special Stuff:
Nick likes: He likes acts of kindness and meanness. He admires you when you donate items, heal Dogmeat and hack computers.
Nick dislikes: He dislikes it when you eat corpses, murder non-hostiles or any acts of stealing.

You CANT romance him!

Carry Weight: 141


MacCready
Description:
MacCready is a mercenary and former mayor of Little Lamplight (Town in Fallout 3). MacCready will give the "Killshot "perk, which grants a 20% accuracy boost for head shots in V.A.T.S.

Location:
You can find MacCready in The Third Rail, a bar in Goodneighbor .
Quest:
"Long Road Ahead" To start the quest you need to gain MacCready's approval. MacCready will speak to you and than you need to accept his quest.

Special Stuff:
MacCready likes: He likes decisions with violent outcomes and stealing (not pickpocketing)
MacCready dislikes: He dislikes decisions with peaceful outcomes and when you murder non-hostiles, when you get chem addicted and donate items.

You CAN romance him!

He is able to steal items undetected right in front of people.

He is very skilled in using a long range weapon like Sniper Rifles!

Carry Weight: 150

He will give a bit of ammo of random types (including fusion cores).

MacCready is able to wear everything the player can wear.
Hancock
Description:
Hancock is a ghoul and the mayor of Goodneighbor. He grants the perk " Isodoped", which fills up your Criticals bar 20 percent faster when your radiation level is 250 or higher.


Location:
Because Hancock ist the mayor of Goodneighbor, he is there.(makes sense, doesn´t it?)
But if you want to recruit him you need to complete the quest "The Big Dig"





Special Stuff:
Hancock likes: He likes it when you use chems and donate items.
Hancock dislikes: He dislikes when you murder non-hostiles or walk around naked.

You CAN romance him!

Carry Weight: 150

He will give some chems to the player.

Hancock is able to wear everything the player can wear.
Cait
Description:
Cait is a drug abusing, Irish pit fighter with a crappy attitude and a mean mood. She grants the player the perk "Trigger Rush" which grants faster AP regeneration when your health is below 25 percent.
Location:
You can find Cait in The Combat Zone.
Quest:
"Benign Intervention" To start the quest you need to gain Caits's approval. Cait will speak to you and than you need to accept her quest.

Special Stuff:

Cait likes: Acts of violence, steal, when you drink booze and walk around nude.
Cait dislikes: Acts of maintaining the peace, donate items, eating corpses and murdering non-hostiles. After the quest "Benign Intervention" she wont like it when you use chems.

You CAN romance her.

Carry Weight: 150

Cait can be used to pick locks of any tier but she needs bobby pins.

Cait is able to wear everything the player can wear.

She is very skilled in using melee weapons.
Codsworth
Description:
Codsworth is a Mister Handy. He grants the player the perk "Robot Sympathy" which grants +10 damage resistance against robot energy weapons.

Location:
You can find him in Sanctuary but Codsworth will become available as a companion after completing the quest Out of Time.

Special Stuff:
Codsworth likes: He likes it when you modify weapons and armor, donate items, being a friendly person and healing Dogmeat.
Codsworth dislikes: He doesn't like it when you use chemicals, murder non-hostiles or perform any acts of stealing.

You CAN´T romance him.

Piper
Description:
Piper is a reporter. She runs her own newspaper called "Publick Occurrences" with her little sister. She grants the perk "Gift Of Gab" which grants double XP during speech challenges and discovering new locations.

Location:
She is infront of Diamond CIty when you enter the citygate for the first time, you cant miss her.

Quests:
You need to complete the quest "Story of the Century" to be able to recruit her. Just enter Publick Occurrences building in diamond city and talk with Piper.

Special Stuff:
Piper likes: healing Dogmeat and lockpicking unclaimed property.
Piper dislikes: She hates it when you eat corpses, murder non-hostiles or steal.

You CAN romance her.

Carry Weight: 150

Piper is able to wear everything the player can wear.
X6-88
Description:
X6-88 is a synth, working for the institute as a Courser. He grants the perk "Shield Harmonics" which grants +20 energy resistance.

Location:
You need to get from Father the quest "Synth Retention". After that you can find him at Libertalia.

Special Stuff:
X6-88 likes: Acts of maintaining the peace, use power armor, hack computers and modify weapons and armor.
X6-88 dislikes: He doesn't like it when you enter a Vertibird, heal Dogmeat and walk around nude.

You CAN´T romance him.

Carry Weight: 150

He will turn hostile if you side against the Institute.
Paladin Danse
Description:
Paladin Danse is a Brotherhood of Steel Paladin. He grants the perk "Know Your Enemy" which grants 20 percent more damage against Feral Ghouls, Super Mutants, and Synths.

Location:
Cambridge Police Station

Quests:
Before you can recruit him, you need to do quite some quests:
"Fire Support" Just listen to Military frequency AF95 when you are near Cambridge.
"Call to Arms" After Fire Support, you need to talk to Paladin Danse and the quest will start.

Now you are a member of the Brotherhood of Steel!

"Semper Invicta" Just help the other 2 Brotherhood soldiers in Cambridge Police Station.
"Shadow of Steel" After you continued the main story and the Prydwen arrives, talk to Paladin Danse.

NOW YOU CAN RECRUIT HIM

"Show No Mercy" Now you need to meet Elder Maxson.
"Liberty Reprimed" Liberty Reprimed is a Brotherhood of Steel main quest. Just play and you will get it soon.
"Blind Betrayal" After completing Liberty Reprimed, the quest will start.

Special Stuff:
Danse likes: when you use a Vertibird, power armor and he approves when you modify weapons and armor. Danse also likes acts of kindness and choices that lead to violent outcomes.
Danse dislikes: A mean personality and choices that lead to peaceful outcomes. He doesn't like it when you use chems, eat corpses, murder non-hostiles or steal.

You CAN romance him!

Siding against the Brotherhood faction before Blind Betrayal makes him permanently hostile

He is ALWAYS wearing Power Armor!
  • While in the BOS he is wearing a T-60 Power Armor
  • After Blind Betrayal he will wear a X-01 Power Armor
Deacon
Description:
Deacon is a Railroad agent. He grants the perk "Cloak & Dagger" which grants 20 percent more sneak attack damage and increases Stealth Boy duration by 40 percent.
Location:
Old North Church

Quests:
"Tradecraft" When you reach the railroad base, talk with Deacon. You will get the quest and after that you will be able to recruit him.

Special Stuff:
Likes: He likes every behavior. He also likes when you donate items, hack computers, heal Dogmeat and pick locks.
Dislikes: Choices that lead to violent outcomes. He is not impressed when you use chems, eat corpses or murder non-hostiles.

You CAN´T romance him!

Deacon will become instantly hostile if the player character kills a settler or anyone involved in the Railroad.

Deacon will become instantly hostile if the player character sides with the Brotherhood of Steel or the Institute in the endgame sequence.

Deacon has the highest sneak ability of all companions and rarely alerts enemies to his presence.

Curie
Description:
Curie is a modified Miss Nanny scientist. She grants the perk "Combat Medic", which grants you automatic healing of 100 health points once a day when your health is below 10 percent.

Location:
You can find her in Vault 81, (secret part of the vault)

Quests:
You can find her at the end of "Hole in the Wall".
"Emergent Behavior" You need to gain Curie's approval. Than she will talk to you and the quest will start.

Special Stuff:
Curie likes: Decisions that lead to peaceful outcomes, when you donate items and heal Dogmeat.
Curie dislikes: selfishness, when you get chem addicted, murder non-hostiles an steal.

You CAN romance her.

Carry Weight: 150

Curie will occasionally give the player character stimpaks.

Curie is able to wear everything the player can wear. (After the quest Emergent Behavior)
Dogmeat
Description:
Dogmeat is a German Shepherd. He doens´t grant a perk.

Location:
You can find him in the Red Rocket Truck Stop next to Sanctuary.


Quests:
"Getting a Clue" is a main quest where you need to show Dogmeat a cigarette.
"Reunions" is a another main quest after "Getting a Clue" where you need to follow Dogmeat.

Special Stuff:
He is neutral - He doesn´t like and hate anything.

By reading the Astoundingly Awesome Tales, the Sole Survivor can boost Dogmeat with perks, which reduce damage dealt to him.


You can place a dog house in a settlement for him!

Dogmeat does not count as a settler when in a settlement .

He is particularly helpful for distracting enemies.

You CANT romance him!

He can wear special dog armor!

Dogmeat is able to "fetch," detecting the surrounding for the choice of items, enemies or containers. Upon finding something, Dogmeat will either stand in front of the item (if on the floor), bite the enemy (triggers enemy detection) or pull out the items from the container. If told to fetch an item near Custom House Tower, he will run to rubble pile near existing mannequins in display windows and pull out random hats. One of these hats can apparently be the Lieutenant's hat or Captain Ironsides' hat.

x8 doesnt go hostile if you go with rail road ending

This says that Hancock dislikes when the player walks around naked, but that's incorrect; walking around naked actually raises his approval.

you can also unlock Piper by completing the quest "reunions"

You should metion that Preston will get items from other settlers/non-hostile NPCs that go stright into his inventory. You can then trade with him to get the items. You uselly get stimpaks, but I once got a fosion core.

You do not need to complete the Silver Shroud quest to unlock Hancock, only The Big Dig :)

before i fully destroyed the institute... normally he would be an enemy... but he was not so i sent him to starlight drive in

i have turned against the institute and x6 did not turn hostile he stayed friendly to me
