Assuming the hinge is set up to rotate in the Y axis (pitch forward and backward) and points straight up at 0 degrees, the piston on top of it is likely meant to extend in the Z axis (since it points straight up). You can set the hinge's home to be 45 degrees, but the hinge is still mainly a Y axis hinge, and the piston mainly a Z axis piston, even if they contribute to movement in other axes while the arm moves.
