Jacobeast's Late Praetorian Guardsmen

Description
Ever felt like taking all the effort to convert the roman empire back to graeco-roman paganism wasn't rewarding enough? Then this mod is for you!

The late praetorian guardsmen are a tier 3 very heavy melee unit that becomes recruitable from every city or military building after converting to graeco-roman paganism as the western or eastern roman empire. I based their design on depictions of late praetorians, such as those that served under Maxentius. As nearly a century passed between the dissolution of the guard and the time the grand campaign is set in, I chose to use the roman ridge helmet, as I felt they'd better reflect the soldiers of late antiquity. These soldiers are the crème de la crème, so take pride in your roman heritage, and make them kick some ass for the glory of the eternal city.

The praetorian guard was established by Augustus, the first roman emperor, in 27 BC to serve as both a (private) force of elite soldiers and the emperor's bodyguard. As the praetorian guard grew in size and power over time, their members became major players in Rome's politics and held key positions at the imperial court. After three centuries of both serving the empire as some of the most capable soldiers as well as playing increasingly ambitious and bloody games inside the palace walls, the remnants of the praetorian guard were finally disbanded in the aftermath of Maxentius' defeat at the hands of Constantine "The Great" in 312 AD. The remaining praetorians were sent to the corners of the empire, where they never forgot what Constantine and his new cult did to their emperor and their empire. As Maxentius' dead body was made to "dance" in Constantine's victory parade, an equally disgraceful event took place as Constantine enforced his religious policies: a jewish sect was favored over the true Roman gods. As the praetorians fathered children, and their children fathered children, these tragic tales were taught from father to son along with the most rigorous training in battle. Now, nearly a century later, as the ruling emperor converts to the true gods, renounces the false myths of christianity, and vows to restore the empire to its former glory, the praetorians flock to the cities in order to serve the realm once more. They now stand more resolute than ever, filled with patriotic vigour to fight and die for their gods, their emperor and most of all, their people.

Unit stats:

Melee defence: 45
Melee attack: 50

----------------------------------------COMPATIBLE WITH RADIOUS-----------------------------------------------

N.B. The unit card for the Late Praetorian Guardsmen is the same unit card as the one for the western palatina. I tried my darndest guys, believe me, to make a custom unit card in photoshop, but even after converting it to the right png format and size, the game refused to use it...

This is my first mod, so any constructive feedback would be appreciated! I'm also working on an elite African/desert legionary unit, so that should be out soon as well. Cheers.

-----------------------------------------11-09-2016 UPDATE------------------------------------------------

-Added custom unit card
-Reskinned the officer
-Added custom standard bearer
-New, fancier, swords for the Praetorian guardsmen
-Minor reskins for the guardsmen

Are these available as a general unit? It would be great if you could choose these instead of the garbage cavalry that replaces the palatina and having to worry about tech upgrades making your general useless.

@jacobeest, if your still interested in making a palatina guards as a normal unit mod, I know I would greatly appreciate having the WRE palatina guards unit as a standard unit for the ERE (I personally detest the vanilla shields of the ERE palatina guards) 😏. ...if you have time/desire to make such mod of course. Great work on these praetorians 😄

Hey jacobeest. Thanks for your effort but there's now already a mod who makes the palatina guards playable ;)

@DwarvenPhalanx: Are you using any mods other than Radious and mine? I haven't had the problem myself, and I've played quite a lot using the mod :(

@Tallestdavid: I chose to use a round shield because those were more common in late antiquity (the images used are of praetorians from 300 A.D.). I tried to imitate the praetorians to a certain extent and make them fit in with the world of late antiquity, glad you liked them and thanks for the feedback!

@Maxydydj: I'll get that done as soon as my computer is fixed, it's quite simple to do, so it shouldn't take long :)

Hey guys, I've been away for quite some time due to an extremely busy year at uni. I finally got the cash to fix my decent laptop, so it should be in working order soon, and I will be able to start modding again :) (mind you, it make take some time).

I'll get back to all of your points now haha
