Description
UPDATED FOR A16!!!

This mod changes the vanilla cold snap event to become more extreme. It is now approximately 20-33% colder depending on the season with colder seasons being worse.

Along with other upcoming mods as well as my already released Realistic Darkness mod, I aim to progressively make the environment of the game considerably harder.

This mod WILL increase difficulty and is meant to be used with the other forthcoming mods to make an overall more hostile and challenging environment.

Important Notes:
  • This mod overwrites your vanilla cold snap event.

  • Should be safe to load/unload on any saves. If you unload the Hoarfrost mod DURING a cold snap it will throw a non-fatal error, and the temperature will revert to normal cold snap temperatures but will continue to work without further concern.

  • Makes the cold snap event 10-33% colder dependant on season with winter being the worst and summer the weakest.

  • This mod does NOT alter incident definitions and thus the length of the event is unchanged. The cold snap event length can be edited like normal from the core definitions, incident defs folder.

  • You may want to shorten the overall length of cold snap events if the cold increase is too drastic.

An Example:

In a Boreal forest, on the morning of the 1st of winter, with an ambient temperature of 20F:
Vanilla cold snap will reach its nadir at approx -38F
Hoarfrost's modded cold snap will reach its nadir at approx -54F

In this example it is 42% colder than vanilla. However, the more samples taken the closer the % increase will hover around 33%.

Let me know how it works out for everyone! With feedback I will adjust things.

Any chance it'll be updated to 1.0? ^_^ There's no alternatives for 1.0 right now.

youre welcome

Actually, the way its written now is the absolute easiest method for amplifying cold/heat snaps. All I did was increase the multiplicative temperature modifier that the game already uses in such events. Nevertheless, I do appreciate your input, thank you.

Well, since you originally aimed to have a steeper temperature curve in it, which can be provided with his mod, but also to have harder events, why not leave out the gradual scaling with seasons, which I imagine is the more difficult part of the mod (my modding knowledge is limited...) and just make multible categories of cold snaps, like a light cold snap that is usually as dangerous as a rabid rabbit, but can for example delay growing season onset at least without killing stuff, the normal sized cold snap that does what it does in vanilla and a brutal one that actually aims at costing fingers and toes if people don't venture inside and start buring the wooden furniture so to speak? because I imagine it is easier to just split it up in different events with different weights then to make them super plausible over the course of a year.

His mod is actually precisely what I wanted to make initially, but didn't have the knowledge to create. I'm playing around with it to see if his can replicate what mine does. As much as i'd like to not have to rewrite my mods, I am leaning towards agreeing with you. His seems to be able to make the temperature generally more difficult whereas my mod makes difficult events.

Thank you for the link to the other weather mod, but I wouldn't call it obsolete since his mod is basically rimworld standard weather on crack and yours is more Heatwave/Cold Snap on Crack.

Hi everyone! So I think this mod may be officially dead and obsolete. Taryn Winterblade just released a temperature mod that is basically my mod here on crack. Its 1000% better and I highly suggest you check it out at http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=948483652&searchtext=

It figures that RIGHT AFTER i updated this mod in A16 to be even more deadly, A17 came and wiped out everything.
