It's the Year 2256, all major planets and moons have been terraformed and colonized.
After the discovery of FasterThanLight travel and the first working jump-drives in
2189 many exoplanets in the closest planetary systems became profitable targets for
mining corporations. Some of these companies even founded their own independent
states. Following their example some of the larger colonies in the solar system
revolted and marked the beginning of the modern space battles.
Many different companies started developing and mass-producing larger and larger ships.
The biggest of those conflicts took place in the asteroid belt between Mars and
Jupiter, as mining the Asteroids was very profitable.
Kagami Space Intergalactic is a ship manufacturer, who quickly rose to power in the third
miner war of Vesta by producing ships for both rivalling conglomerates.
While the terran Emphia Holding Conglomerate tried to stay in control of Vesta after
it's conquest in the second miner war, the marsian Markosa Mining Corp. bought hundreds of
ships to break the domination of terran companies in the asteroid belt.
As their fighters and corvettes proved to be very effective, new contracts from dozens of
diffrent companies almost doubled KSI's income and laid the way for new shipyards
and new ship designs ranging from civilian crafts to military fighters to battleships.

I classify my ships in 3 different categories.
Tier 1: small not self-sufficient crafts (basically all small ships)

• cannot travel between planets
  
• cannot operate independently for more than a few hours
  
• need hangar space (ship or station)
  
• mostly no interior
  
• Fighters, Shuttles, Gunships ...

Tier 2: non jump-capable ships (every large ship without JumpDrive)

• can travel between planets (jumpdrive would be too dangerous, therefore only common engines)
  
• can operate independently for days or even weeks
  
• cannot travel to other planetary systems
  
• can carry around small crafts
  
• basic interior
  
• Patrol Ships, Missile Boats, Corvettes...

Tier 3: jump-capable ships (every large ship with JumpDrive)

• can travel between planets (jumpdrive would be too dangerous, therefore only common engines)
  
• can operate independently for weeks or longer
  
• can travel to other planetary systems
  
• can carry around small crafts and sometimes even Tier 2 ships (and jump with them)
  
• extended interior with medbay, crew's space etc.
  
• Frigates, Destroyers, Carriers...
