Dorf (Dwarf Race Mod)

Description
Dorf adds Dwarfs as a playable race in Stellaris along with some related Dwarf inspired assets.

Features
  • Playable Dwarf race in its own species section (Create New > Appearance)
  • Dwarven non-animated artwork for race portraits (distinct male and female versions)
  • Leader roles have distinct sets of outfits (e.g. scientists and generals do not wear same clothes)
  • Dwarven Race and Homeworld suggested names
  • Dwarven inspired name list (pops, planets and ships – a mix of fantasy/realistic)
  • Dwarven inspired flag icons (by default these are not set to be used for the AI)
  • Dwarven AI race may appear in your game
  • Dwarven inspired events (a work in progress)

How to use this mod
  1. Start a new custom game and choose Dwarven from within the ‘Appearance’ section
  2. Make sure to select Dwarven in the ‘Name Lists’ section. This is not set automatically when you select the race.
  3. I would recommend manually changing the Adjective value in the ‘Species Name’ section to Dwarven (the game code defaults to Dwarf)

Known Issues
I have chosen to leave Dwarfs as a separate group in the species list (at least for now). Technically they could go in to the mammalian group now that the scroll bar is working (post Stellaris patch 1.1.0), but this will be looked at in the future update.

Dwarven name list does not appear as an option when running with the 40K: Twilight Imperium Mod. Everything else works as normal though.

When starting a new game you may get some portrait variations repeated in your initial batch of leaders and pops. This may be a problem with the random number generator of the game, as increasing the choices for the game to choose from still consistently creates duplicates on a new start. After the first batch of portraits are chosen, variations appear to be selected much more randomly when new pops and leaders are added by the game.

I am aware of quality issues with some images (e.g. jaggies) and I intend to go back and improve on these over time. Unfortunately, my ideas are big but my Photoshop skills small

Dorf was primarily designed as a player race and has not been extensively tested as an AI race. However, it should also work as an AI race, please let me know if you run in to problems.

Bug reports and Suggestions
If you encounter a problem with this mod or have a suggestion to change or add something, please post to the Discussions tab above, not to the Comments section as it may take me longer to notice if placed there.

FAQ
Q. Can I use your assets in my mod?
A. Yes that’s fine, but if you could credit this mod and add a link I would be grateful.

Q. How can I add my own custom Dwarfs AI race?
A. To add an Ai race start a new game and create a custom Dwarf race, then when you are happy with your design click the Save button instead of Done. Return to the main menu and you will see the Dwarf race you created. Click on the Phoenix icon to set the race to appear as an AI race in game.

Q. Why do you use Dwarfs instead of Dwarves and Dwarven instead of Dwarvish or Dwarfish?
A. Tolkien admitted in a letter to Stanley Unwin that using Dwarves in his books was a mistake and he actually meant to use Dwarfs. Personally, I prefer Dwarves but I’ll just go with what Tolkien said.

Dwarvish or Dwarven are both correct. I chose to use Dwarven as the adjective in the mod, because to me it seems to fit more with objects and Dwarvish applies to the language. In a similar way to how you might use the words Elvish and Elven

Q. Why is it called Dorf?
A. Many (many) years ago when I played Everquest(1), Dwarfs were often referred to as Dorfs in an insulting manner by other races. I played a Dwarf and actually kind of liked the nickname.

Future development
These are some ideas for future content updates
  • Dwarven race specific anomalies (has begun to be implemented)
  • More head and outfit variations
  • More flags
  • More/tweak ship and pop name lists (more have been added, but still a work in progress)
  • Possibly (possibly) converting the images to be animated

Change Log

Dorf v1.14a (12Oct2017)
Fixed: Flag graphic compatibility issues with older save games using this mod

Dorf v1.14 (11Oct2017)
Added: Compatibility with Stellaris patch 1.8.2
Fixed: The broken anomaly is (Hopefully) now working properly
Added: Naming support for modded ship classes

Dorf v1.13a (04Oct2017)
Fixed: More minor issues, including a bug where defensive armies were all being named 1st
Added: Erbkaiser to the credits section of the main page. I really appreciate your help

Dorf v1.13 (04Oct2017)
Fixed: Multiple minor coding errors which were affecting functionality of Dwarf AI cultures and anomalies. There was also an entire image file missing from my upload, Ops

Thanks again to Erbkaiser for pointing out the problem areas and suggesting fix code.

Dorf v1.12 (01Oct2017)
IMPORTANT: Due to changes brought in with version 1.8 of Stellaris, Dorf is not compatible with the standard version 1.8, but is compatible with the opt-in 1.8.1_beta version. If you attempt to run Stellaris with the live version 1.8 and this mod enabled your client may crash. You will find that many other species mods will be affected to varying degrees depending on how much the mod developer has tried to make it compatible. This will be a temporary situation until 1.8.1 goes live, which hopefully should be soon. Fixing mods under 1.8 is possible, but very hard. Under 1.8.1 it is quite easy to make them compatible again, hence I won’t be fixing this mod for 1.8 (sorry)

Changes in this update:

Added: Compatibility with Stellaris patch 1.8.1_beta (NOT version 1.8)
Fixed: Historical design decisions which may, under rare circumstances, have left the mod vulnerable to clashes with other mods
Added: Dwarfs can now appear as a random AI race
Added: A new anomaly event has been added, incorporating new non-vanilla artwork.

Please provide feedback on any problems you encounter via the Comments tab

Dorf v1.11 (23Aug2017)
This update includes some experimental code which affects diplomatic speech (AI toward you when you are playing the Dorf race). This should resolve the placeholder issue present in some of the dialog e.g. ‘(insult)’ appearing instead of an actual insult

Looking at the vanilla race scripted dialog it can be seen that it is quite difficult to pick words which would suit all permutations of the replaced texts use. You may find the replaced text does not ‘fit’ exactly in some contexts.

I’ve tried to choose text which fits within the existing vanilla usage, but any modded greeting texts has the potential to cause issues. If you experience any wildly out of context dialog towards you from AI players please let me know via the Discussions tab and include the dialog around the occurrence

Hi Ironbucket, ive read the patchnotes, can you elaborate what you and some comunity belive it to be a "traitorous move", the FTL change or something else? Just curious =)
Ironbuket  [author] Feb 22, 2018 @ 8:00pm
Because of the whole Apocalypse DLC gameplay change controversy, Im not going to update this mod for anymore version changes. I'll have to create a separate updated version for Apocalypse and beyond, but as one of the minority players that consider this update a terrible decision and a traitorous move by the developers, my motivation to do so is not very high.

As some people have put it, they have turned the game from something unique in to Endless Space 2

okay then i understand. Well it was worth a try. Tho glorius greatbearded spacedwarfs would be nice to see .D ill take a shot at the mod and see how i like it in the future.
Ironbuket  [author] Feb 16, 2018 @ 5:22am
Im limited by the size of beard in the game the graphics were pulled from unfortunatly. OR maybe it is because space Dorfs have to have shorter beards else when they put on their space helmets they would have to cram their beard inside making it impossible to see anything at all :)
Mustache Enthusiast Feb 15, 2018 @ 10:31am
Question Do you think that you may implement Magnificent Great BEARDS? like the ones that lets say gimli from lord of the rings got. if you do that then i will defenitly try out this mod

I just posted an update for Stellaris version 1.8.2 and also fixed a few things at the same time. Sorry for the delay with this patch, RL had me busy for a few days

Thanks for the quick fix for 1.8.1. :)

Dorf can once again be used in Stellaris, but please read the import text below before trying to use it again

Please note that the recent 1.8 Stellaris patch has introduced changes which affects all mods that include custom race types (including this mod).

Discussion about these issues can be found on the official forums here: https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/index.php?threads/1-8.1044945/page-4#post-23321356

In essence, changes were made which would require excessive coding to make existing (and future) custom race type mods fully compatible with the changes introduced along with the release of the Synthetic Dawn DLC

There has been an official response to the situation and Paradox developers are working on changes which will return custom race mods to full functionality. Until a corrective patch is rolled out, you may find that Dorf and most other custom race mods will encounter incompatibility issues with path 1.8.
