Ship Class Definitions(Very Basic)
От SgtE209
A VERY BASIC guide on "ship classification" for those who wish to use a class in their ship building. Ship classes moslty were based off of size or mission in the early beginnings of naval warfare. Wanting to know more about some of the mission type vessels and how to implement them into Space Engineers I just did a little research and decided to share some of what I found. There are many different classes of ships you can come up with, or even make up one if you want. But here are the basics to get started and hopefully give you some ideas if you are interested. This is very basic information to get you started.

Corvette Class
A corvette is a small warship. It is traditionally the smallest class of vessel considered to be a warship, and the term applied to small, mass-produced escorts. The warship class above the corvette is that of the frigate. The modern types of ship below a corvette are coastal patrol craft and fast attack craft.

They are usually armed with medium- and small-caliber guns, surface-to-surface missiles, surface-to-air missiles, and antiship weapons, but the sensors, weapons, and other systems required for a corvette are more specialized.
Frigate Class
The Frigate is any of several types of warship, this term was used for any warship built for speed and maneuverability.
Frigates are used to protect other warships and merchant-marine ships, underway replenishment groups, and merchant convoys. Ship classes dubbed "frigates" closely resemble corvettes, destroyers, cruisers, and even battleships. It is their size generally, but mainly thier speed to engage quickly and cause havoc during an attack on their fellow ships and deal immense damage.

The Armored or Heavy Frigate is just a bit heavier due to increased armor and more guns. In the early days of frigates that used sails and wind, some frigates have upwards of 60 guns on deck.

Mainly for protection they can deal a devastating blow to their enemies and be gone before they take too much damage themselves.

Cruiser Class
A cruiser is another type of warship. The term cruising referred to certain kinds of missions – independent scouting, raiding or commerce protection.

At one point, cruiser came to be a classification for the ships intended for cruising distant waters and scouting for the battle fleet. Cruisers came in several different sizes, from a small protected cruiser to armored cruisers, some as big as a battleship but not as powerful in armament.

In modern day navies, the role of the cruiser has varied according to ship and navy, often including air defense, commerce raiding, and shore bombardment. New modern Cruisers are often designed for specific missions with guided missiles instead of an array of guns, missiles either for sea to air, or sea to land based targets.

So these ships can vary in size, mission, armament. A versatile class you can use for a lot of ships.

Destroyer Class
A Destroyer is a fast maneuverable long-endurance warship intended to escort larger vessels in a fleet, convoy or battle group and defend them against smaller powerful short-range attackers. They were originally developed to counter torpedo boats, these "torpedo boat destroyers" (TBD) were "large, swift, and powerfully armed torpedo boats designed to destroy other torpedo boats."

In the beginning Destroyers were light vessels with little endurance for unattended ocean operations; the advent of the guided missile allowed destroyers to take on the surface combatant roles. This resulted in larger and more powerful guided missile destroyers more capable of independent operatio

Modern destroyers, also known as guided missile destroyers, are equivalent in tonnage but vastly superior in firepower to cruisers.

An escort ship at its beginnings, was made for defense and annihilation of any smaller ships trying to infiltrate a convoy of warships or commerce ships.

In Space Engineers, once again the versatility of the definition leaves it up to the imagination of the builder to what kind of class of ship he considers his/her ship to be in.
Battleship Class
A battleship is a large armored warship with a main battery consisting of heavy caliber guns.

In the beginning, even with their enormous firepower and protection, battleships were increasingly vulnerable to much smaller, cheaper weapons: initially the torpedo and the naval mine, and later aircraft and the guided missile. The growing range of naval engagements led to the aircraft carrier replacing the battleship as the leading capital ship in modern naval history.

Battleships became massive gun platforms that could deal damage ship to ship or ship to shore. Increased size didn't mean less speed. Battleships could get to great speed historically but still was mainly just a large gun platform.

In Space Engineers, A massive heavily armored foe with immense fire power would probably fit in well, if you could keep it supplied in survival mode. Dream big, Go Big!!
Carrier Class

INTERIOR OF DEEP SPACE STEALTH CARRIER

Carrier class is the most well known of course because it is simply a carrier for others to launch from. In modern day, the Carrier has taken the place of Battleships with large guns to basically being a launching pad for any kind of ship you want to outfit ie. bomber, fighter, scout, drones,,,,

Carriers are mostly very well protected with several different armaments to prevent attackers from doing too much damage before it can launch its own attackers and deal its own revenge from several different ships.

Let your imagination run wild with carriers. In Space Engineers, the sky, well, the space is the limit!

I said "VERY" basic, there are several sub classes some of them the same design as their larger counterpart, Just a simple guide to get people started. For those that are interested more, they will dig deeper.

What about Dreadnoughts?
