I just completed a Long War series. Yes it is challenging and will take a significant amount of time. You will lose troopers and countries will fall to the aliens. Be patient. The fight back will be difficult but not impossible. There is tremendous satisfaction killing the aliens and driving them off the planet. There are some points - The air game is brutal. Pick "The Friendly Skies" this will help but do not expect to intercept and engage all alien ships. Other helpful second wave options I would recommend
Hidden potential
Commander's Choice
Perfect Information
Also - use the UFOpedia and Long War Wiki - they are invaluable resources to help with this mod
Anyway I stick to my idea. It makes sense to me ;)
For me primary class for officer is medic. Usually if someone has bad aim and is not fast to be scout, is medic or engineer. If has low will then it's enginner, medic otherwise. As engineer have grenades that don't need aiming, medic is obvious choice for officer. I also have 2 or 3 snipers officers, if I need to take on mission additional MEC or for another reason and 1 rocketeer for missions where I take jaeger instead of sniper and also take guardian so I don't need medic too.
